This family backyard outdoor living area was designed to showcase the natural greenery of the Pacific Northwest around planned areas for relaxation, outdoor dining and entertainment. The central feature is a patio plaza designed with curving natural shapes and made with Mutual Materials Columbia Slate Patio Stone in the color Summit Blend. Applying a paver sealant coating on top of the Columbia Slate intensifies the colors while providing protection from weather elements and fading. A prominent backyard feature is a large tree, which the patio was built around. Using Mutual Materials Roman Stack® retaining wall blocks, a raised circular garden planter was built around the tree and enhanced with plantings to create a natural foundational feature. The Summit Blend color was also chosen for the RomanStackstone, to color coordinate with the Summit Blend color in the patio stone.

This 7,000 square foot space located is a modern weekend getaway for a modern family of four. The owners were looking for a designer who could fuse their love of art and elegant furnishings with the practicality that would fit their lifestyle. They owned the land and wanted to build their new home from the ground up. Betty Wasserman Art & Interiors, Ltd. was a natural fit to make their vision a reality. Upon entering the house, you are immediately drawn to the clean, contemporary space that greets your eye. A curtain wall of glass with sliding doors, along the back of the house, allows everyone to enjoy the harbor views and a calming connection to the outdoors from any vantage point, simultaneously allowing watchful parents to keep an eye on the children in the pool while relaxing indoors. Here, as in all her projects, Betty focused on the interaction between pattern and texture, industrial and organic.

Design ideas for a contemporary landscaping in Boston.

Once this new direction set in, the clients contracted with a Landscape Architect to create this classic formal design for a cohesive pool, deck, and landscape master plan. The rear wall of the pool is a beautifully proportioned multi-height wall, faced in Leuder limestone. The central water feature wall is 6 tall, covered in glistening blue glass tile, is home to a cast stone medallion, spilling into a 36 wide cast stone bowl. Leuder limestone columns with gas lanterns frame this beautiful feature. As the stone walls gracefully stair-step down, shorter columns serve as the base to four Frank Lloyd Wright inspired cast stone bowls. Bronze scuppers on the outside walls provide another fine detail, and additional water sound to the space. The interior of the pool is finished with WetEdge Luna Quartz plaster, and a glass mosaic tile at the waterline. LED lighting adds the drama at night, intensifying the blue color of the plaster. Across the pool, the 12 raised all-tile spa is surrounded by Travertine decks set in a classic lattice pattern, with synthetic turf separating the squares. The existing covered patios were re-surfaced in the same Travertine, with new Leuder limestone steps leading down to the pool level. All of the Leuder on the property is finished with a beautiful bullnose edge, softening the lines, and adding to the formality of the design.

GELTNER LOFT Private Residence New York, NY Construction: 2000 1000 sq. ft. In response to budgetary constraints, only half of the loft was renovated. Rather than attempting to seamlessly fuse new and old, this division establishes the territory of the renovation and produces a proscenium-like condition between the two sides of the apartment. This theatrical effect is intensified by the luminous plane of translucent material backed by fluorescent tubes which replaces the existing ceiling of exposed beams. Into this newly defined domestic stage a series of linked elements are inserted: a steel and maple stair, a kitchen, and a wall of cabinetry. Two treads of the new stair extend outward and wrap into one another to produce a cabinet and a continuos steel railing links all three levels of the apartment, providing both structure and a backsplash as it intersects with the stair cabinet.
