The focal point in the kitchen is the deep navy, French range positioned in an alcove trimmed in distressed natural wood and finished with handmade tile. The arched marble backsplash of the bar creates a dramatic focal point visible from the dining room.

When the family of five moved into this lakeside home on Lake Minnetonka, a gourmet kitchen was in order. Their interior designer, Brandi Hagen of Eminent Interior Design transformed the all –white room by melding a traditional tile backsplash, beautifully light-stained maple floors, a bead-board ceiling with a contemporary black and white color scheme. The original white upper cabinets remain light and airy in contrast to the elegant, black lower cabinets and appliances. The tile backsplash and center-island granite features incorporate all colors to unify the interior designed space. These high gloss white cabinets are the perfect compliment to the single bowl sink. The black porcelain tile floor is low maintenance and a great touch to the minimalist look of the space. Townhouse renovation in Brooklyn: We redesigned the rear end of the house as an expanded family kitchen with a back door to the deck. We also added a new connection from the entrance hall to the kitchen and fit a small powder room under the stairs. The old windows and doors were replaced with new, larger ones, and the entire kitchen was gutted and refitted with new cabinetry and a banquette dining area. The space was designed to take advantage of the bright southern exposure, with lots of white materials, grounded by the dark base cabinets. Photos by Maletz Design

For this kitchen renovation, the homeowners wanted to keep their oak cabinets but wanted to freshen up and modernize their space. I changed the cabinet hardware, took down some 80s wallpaper, got new appliances and beautiful new granite countertops. I also had a custom backsplash made by Mercury Mosaics. The old dinette set was dated so I had a custom table and chairs made. Small changes helped bring a dated kitchen into the present.

In the design stages many details were incorporated in this classic kitchen to give it dimension since the surround cabinets, counters and backsplash were white. Polished nickel plumbing, hardware and custom grilles on feature cabinets along with the island pendants add shine, while finer details such as inset doors, furniture kicks on non-working areas and lofty crown details add a layering effect in the millwork. By installing White Macaubas Quartzite countertops, these homeowner's were able to obtain the look of marble without its porous qualities and maintenance. These natural stone countertops complement the polished Calacata Gold marble and glass Toledo pattern mosaic tile backsplash wonderfully, making it stand out like an art piece. We partnered with DPM Designs, LLC of Medford, NJ on this project.
