This is a master bath with subtle sophistication and understated elegance. The cabinets were custom designed by Tom, with straight, simple lines, and custom built by Draper DBS of walnut, with a deep, rich brown finish. The richness of the dark cabinetry juxtaposed with the elegance of the white carrara marble on the countertop, wall and floors contributes to the room's sophistication. Ample storage is found in the large vanity and an armoire style cabinet, designed to mimic a free-standing furniture piece, that is positioned behind the door. Architectural beams placed across the vaulted ceiling bring a sense of scale to the room and invite natural light in through the skylight.

Kitchen is Center
In our design to combine the apartments, we centered the kitchen - making it a dividing line between private and public space; vastly expanding the storage and work surface area. We discovered an existing unused roof penetration to run a duct to vent out a powerful kitchen hood.
The original bathroom skylight now illuminates the central kitchen space. Without changing the standard skylight size, we gave it architectural scale by carving out the ceiling to maximize daylight.
Light now dances off the vaulted, sculptural angles of the ceiling to bathe the entire space in natural light.

We're very proud of this beautiful modern kitchen in a new home in Menlo Park. White glossy cabinets from the Aran Cucine Erika collection and base cabinets in Jeres Elm Tranche from the Mia collection with aluminum c-channel handles. The white glossy base cabinets for the bar are also Erika, and the black round bar cabinets are from the Volare collection in high gloss lacquer.
The quartz countertop with waterfall edge is Silestone in White Zeus. Undermount sink by Blanco and range hood from Futuro Futuro. Other appliances from Miele.

The master bedroom sparkles in cobalt, light blue, and white. In studies on the effects of our responses to color, it was found that pale blues and greens actually lower respiration rates, and are most conducive to a good night's sleep. Both the headboard and the window seat cushions are made in a royal blue linen fabric from Lee Jofa.

Wire trellis with climbing vines help define the edge of the pedestrian walk. The trellis is steel tubes supporting steel tube crossbars. Stainless steel cables provide the support for drought tolerant bougainvillea to respire from column to column.

As shown in the second picture, the problem was more severe on the East side of the house. The water had rusted through the original nails holding the dentals to the base molding. The base molding had warped and pulled away from the upper crown. In addition to the CPES product, we used epoxy to fill the gaps and cracks in the wood. As a final step before caulking and painting, we applied a coat of high-built adhesive primer to all the trim elements of the building, including the window casings, which were original to the house. The crown moldings and window casings were seemingly made of old-growth wood, which survived in these hash conditions, without rotting for over one hundred fifty years. This wood is still hard as stone today! Wood like this deserves every bit of care we can muster to help preserve it for another century or more.
As you can also see in the second picture, since our painting and decorating company is EPA Lead-Safe Certified, the paint scraping process was done in compliance with EPA regulations. It involved setting up containment for the paint debris, sealing the windows, wearing protective garments, respirators etc., all this in 90 degree heat this week!
As a pioneer and early settler’s house, the Colonel Palmer house is quite remarkable by its size, style and quality of materials used in its construction. This was no shack on the prairie! It is well worth preserving for the generations to come.
