The bench curves around the space and connects with the kitchen area. The fire bowl, which nestles in the circular part of the bench, is oversized as not to be overwhelmed by the open space.

This kitchen is part of a major renovation to a historic home built in 1899. A classic color palette of navy blue, camel and off-white makes a bold statement but does not overwhelm the space. The large windows provide abundant natural light which is so welcome in Minnesota's long grey winters. The traditional style of the cabinets ground the kitchen into the proper personality of the home. The personality of the homeowner is expressed through the unusual mix of materials, colors and textures. Using stripes on the various planes on the floor and walls help to define the areas individual personality. Many green products were used in the kitchen including the cork floor, low VOC paint, LED lighting, Cambria quartz counter tops, locally made navy tile. Additionally, the top of the table in the breakfast nook is manufactured from trees that have fallen in the Twin Cities due to storms, age or that have been removed by builders. The base is made by a talented local artist. The industrial style light fixture above the island is custom made.

For this bedroom design, the key concept was to optimise space and provide a functional furniture solution. In order to include a small double bed, wardrobes and a work space we carefully considered multiple floor plans to ensure we could make the most of the space to work our clients’ day-to-day life. Something we could potentially consider is multi-use furniture, such as a combined desk and wardrobe solution, depending on availability of products and their dimensions.
With multiple furniture requirements in a small space, there can be a risk of the room being overwhelmed. So, to prevent this, a light and neutral colour palette maximises natural light and forms a bright and airy atmosphere. Painting the walls white balances the room with a complimenting lime-washed feature panelling to introduce texture which elevates the design. Minimal decor accessories, from greenery to vases, tastefully bring interest and character without cluttering the space.
