The Better Homes and Gardens 2015 Innovation Home, featuring Plain & Fancy custom cabinetry, highlights creative products, smart design solutions, energy efficiency and technology that is completely connected. The Innovation Home intends to offer new ideas that aim to make life easier and more connected than ever before.
The kitchen mixes classic woods and finishes, like the natural Walnut hutch and white range cabinetry, with more eye-catching elements like the custom color dark blue island. Accessories like pullout drawers, cutlery divides and customizable drawer peg systems offer ample storage space while glass front cabinetry showcase fine dinnerware and other collectibles. Integrated cabinet lighting, that turns on when you open the doors or drawers, adds a layer of functionality making it easy to find what you are looking for, even when the room lighting is low. Walnut drawer boxes carry the look of natural wood and enable this kitchen to stand apart from other designs. To read more on this collaboration, read our blog post.
Wine Cellar Specialists
We included a wine tasting table in this Washington wine storage room, for the sake of comfort and convenience.
The arch display can be used as a space to decant/pour wine, and the table itself as somewhere to sample and enjoy it.
A chandelier illuminates the wine room, through the use of LED lighting. Recessed LED lights were also placed above the horizontal display rows (right).
There are horizontal display areas, which store the bottles in a label forward orientation. We used Mahogany for the racking. It is durable and more attractive when stained.

THE SETUP
“You have to figure out how to rebuild a life worth living,” Basia Kozub’s client says. Her husband passed away suddenly three years ago. Holidays with family became more important, and she found herself struggling with a 37-year old kitchen that was falling apart. “I made a decision to move forward,” she says. “I went, ‘You know what? I’m redoing the kitchen.'”
The big task of getting started was as easy as having a conversation – literally. Basia was on the job, helping the client sort through priorities, wishes and ideas. Basia’s client is 5′ 4″, likes keeping an eye on the kiddoes in the backyard and wanted certain things to have their own place.
THE REMODEL
The objectives were:
Enlarge and open the space
Find a classic look that incorporates blues
Upgrade to easy-to-use appliances
Hide an office space within the space
Ample storage for dishes
Design challenges:
Uneven window alignment on the back wall
Original kitchen smaller than desired, stuctural concerns if walls to be moved
Keep folks close – figure out seating for entertaining
Main sink in corner is ideal, but windows are hard to reach
Lots of storage needed for dishes, glass collection, pantry items, bar bottles and office supplies
Specific storage needs for oft-used spices and utensils
THE RENEWED SPACE
Design solutions:
Replace back wall windows, establish window size continuity
Take out two walls to open up the space, tall shallow cabinet and a tall filler added to conceal a new header
Large island that seats six easily
Custom corner sink cabinet with recessed edge allows vertically challenged homeowner to reach the windows
Mindful storage planning features: plenty of cabinets, pull-out bar bottle storage, file drawers & cubbies with pocket doors for office appliances, magic corner pullouts, and appliance garages with pocket doors
Shelf behind range for easy access to daily-use spices and oils. Also: spice and utensil pullouts on either side of range
The clients says every priority and wish box got checked. The highly functional design absorbed everything that used to be in that area of the house, but now those things are out of the way.
“In the past, we were all spread out when we gathered for the holidays, because we had to spread out. Now, we’re all in here together, including my 92-year old mother. We’re visiting, cooking, laughing… everyone is here. And I’m really learning how to use these appliances. This kitchen has given me a whole new life.”
Paradise Homes
After extensive research online, Steve felt that the architectural style of Paradise Homes, with their clean lines and unique 'pavilion' concept, was compatible with the couple's wish for a luxurious sense of space together with more intimate private 'zones'. After checking the BSA builders' database and finding Paradise Home's record was entirely blemish-free, he called Chief Designer Anthony Jaensch. After a preliminary chat, Steve realised they were on the same wavelength and that was that!
Being a long, narrow block on a steep, sloping site meant building was going to be tricky. Steve and Laura wanted to take advantage of the site's northern aspect, breezes, and mature surrounding trees. Their brief also specified the home take full advantage of the elevation in the street, and let the beauty of the leafy St Lucia environs flow inside, giving them discrete spaces with the flexibility of a second semi-independent living area.
Anthony was able to meet their brief in spades, creating clever building solutions and optimising the block for orientation. Paradise Homes handled the design process very efficiently, even though most of the designing occurred with the clients overseas in Hong Kong, as Steve explains, "Anthony was superb in this process. He has an eye for detail, as you'd expect of a designer of his experience, but also a vision for how surfaces will synthesise in the finished product."

A playful re-imagining of a Victorian terrace with a large rear extension.
The project started as a problem solving exercise – the owner of the house was very tall and he had never been able to have a shower in the pokey outrigger bathroom, there was simply not enough ceiling height. The lower ground floor kitchen also suffered from low ceilings and was dark and uninviting. There was very little connection to the garden, surrounded by trees, which felt like a lost opportunity. The whole house needed rethinking.
The solution we proposed was to extend into the generous garden at the rear and reconstruct the existing outrigger with an extra storey. We used the outrigger to relocate the staircase to the lower ground floor, moving it from the centre of the house into a double height space in the extension. This gave the house a very generous sense of height and space and allows light to flood into the kitchen and hall from high level windows. These provide glances of the surrounding tress as you descent to the dining room.
The extension allows the kitchen and dining room to push further into the garden, making the most of the views and light. A strip rooflight over the kitchen wall units brings light deep into the space and washes the kitchen with sunlight during the day. Behind the kitchen, where there was no access to natural light, we tucked a utility room and shower room, with a second sitting room at the front of the house. The extension has a green sedum roof to ensure it feels like part of the garden when seen from the upper floors of the house. We used a pale white and yellow brick to complement the colour of the London stock brickwork, but maintain a contemporary aesthetic. Oak windows and sliding door add a warmth to the extension and tie in with the materials we used internally.
Internally there is a palette of bold colours to define the living spaces, including an entirely yellow corridor the client has named ‘The Yolky Way’ leading from the kitchen to the front reception room, complete with hidden yellow doors. These are offset against more natural materials such as the oak batten cladding, which define the dining space and also line the back wall of the kitchen concealing the fridge door and larder units. A bespoke terrazzo counter unites the colours of the floor, oak cladding and cupboard doors and the tiled floor leads seamlessly to the outside patio, leading the eye back into the garden.
A new bathroom with a generous ceiling height was placed in the reconstructed outrigger, with triple aspect windows, including a picture window at the end of the bath framing views of the trees in the garden.
Upstairs we kept the traditional Victorian layout, refurbished the windows and shutters, reinstating cornice and ceiling roses to the principal rooms. At every point in the project the ergonomics of the house were considered, tall doors, very high kitchen worktops and always maximising ceiling heights, ensuring the house was more suited to its tall owner.

Great room remodel to create a more eye catching space for entertaining. Custom designed cabinetry is detailed with textural stone veneers that are enhanced with accent lighting.
StoneUnlimited Kitchen and Bath Remodeling
This beautiful bathroom remodel by Stoneunlimited Kitchen and Bath has all the bells and whistles that any dream bath should have.
Middleton Maple Medallion cabinetry in Frappe finish with soft close doors and dovetail construction are topped off with beautiful Brunello Quartz that have a soft veining pattern and look like marble. The decision to install 2 vanity top towers allowed for more storage solutions and created a vertical component that added balance to the room. Check out the before images of this part of bathroom our website, there used to be a linen closet on this wall.
The shower is luxurious with its Delta fixtures, 4 body sprays, hand shower and shower trim at the entrance for easy access to turning on the water. The hex patterned tile above the niche is a nice design element that draws the eye upward and in line with the mirrors installed on the opposite wall. A linear drain with tile insert, allows for drainage without the traditional look of a drain.
Serpentino Blanco Porcelain tiles throughout, add an element of texture with it's fluid soft veining pattern. The flooring isn't just beautiful, it's been upgraded. Heated floors throughout will provide warmth to the feet during cold days and our clients can even program the thermostat according to their bathing schedule.
Last but not least is the 60" free standing tub. It's tub filler and hand-shower make it the perfect place to soak and relax after a long day.

The Kitchen Store
Our client wanted to merge their kitchen and utility spaces into one seamless open-plan area. The goal was to create a modern shaker kitchen that exudes sophistication and complements the beautiful natural surroundings of their Downs location. Emphasising a bright and airy atmosphere was a top priority, reflecting the spaciousness of the outdoor environment.
For this project, we selected the Nolte Torino Lac in Sahara, beautifully accented with Tavloa Oak Pinot. The Manganese Bronze handles add a subtle yet striking detail to the overall design, complementing the neutral tones of the kitchen.
To achieve the desired contrast and eye-catching appeal, we opted for the Sense Glacial Blue worksurface. Its stunning blend of aesthetics and functionality perfectly matches the modern shaker style. The 30mm thickness, along with an 80mm fully clad breakfast bar & 100mm upstands, provides a seamless and stylish finish.
When it comes to appliances, we won’t settle for anything but the best. Throughout the space, we've incorporated high-quality Miele and Siemens appliances. These trusted brands ensure top-notch performance, durability and innovative features to enhance the overall cooking and kitchen experience.
Our clients expressed the desire for a social hub within their kitchen space, with the peninsula becoming the perfect solution. With its functional design and seating options, the peninsula encourages lively conversations and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere for family and guests.
We take pride in bringing our clients' dreams to life and this modern shaker kitchen is testament to our commitment to creating spaces that inspire, captivate and enrich the heart of the home.

Overview
A wrap-around extension with kitchen/living/dining space
The Brief
Design a family space with lots of light and areas for seating, cooking and eating for a young family. Create specific areas for a good-sized kitchen and dining space for day to day eating AND special occasions. We were to create a seating space or snug for the kids to play in off the kitchen where the parents to keep on eye on them and weave in storage where possible.
Our Solution
We designed a wrap-around extension with a flat roof that allowed for carefully placed roof lights across the plan. The middle reception room was turned into a snug for TV, play and other uses (a flexible space), while the new area is home to a kitchen and dining space with maximised views of the garden. The design brings in lots of light and has a sense of openness as per the brief. This is the archetypal wrap-around family home design which creates a great family space and adds value to the property.

The Challenge
This beautiful waterfront home was begging for an update. Our clients wanted a contemporary design with modern finishes. They craved improved functionality in the kitchen, hardwood flooring in the living areas, and a spacious walk-in closet in the master bathroom. With two children in school, our clients also needed the project completed during their summer vacation – leaving a slim 90 days for the entire remodel. Could we do it? …Challenge accepted!
Our Solution
With their active summer travel schedule, our clients elected to vacate their home for the duration of the project. This was ideal for the intrusive nature of the scope of work.
In preparation, our design team created a project plan to suit our client’s needs. With such a clear timeline, we were able to select and order long-lead items in plenty of time for the project start date.
In the kitchen, we rearranged the layout to provide superior ventilation for the cooktop on the exterior wall. We added two large storage cabinets with glass doors, accented by a sleek mosaic backsplash of glass tile. We also incorporated a large contemporary waterfall island into the room. With seating at one end, the island provides both increased functionality and an eye-catching focal point for the center of the room. On the interior wall of the kitchen, we maximized storage with a wall of built-in cabinetry – complete with pullout pantry cabinets, a double oven, and a large stainless refrigerator.
Our clients wisely chose rich, dark-colored wood flooring to add warmth to the contemporary design. After installing the flooring in the kitchen, we brought it into the main living areas as well. In the great room, we wrapped the existing gas fireplace in a neutral stack stone. The effect of the stone on the media and window wall is breathtaking.
In the master bathroom, we expanded the closet by pushing the wall back into the adjacent pass-through hallway. The new walk-in closet now includes an impressive closet organization system.
Returning to the master bathroom, we removed the single vanity and repositioned the toilet, allowing for a new, curb-less glass shower and a his-and-hers vanity. The entire vanity and shower wall is finished in white 12×24 porcelain tile. The vertical glass mosaic accent band and backlit floating mirrors add to the clean, modern style. To the left of the master bathroom entry, we even added a matching make-up area.
Finally, we installed a number of elegant enhancements in the remaining rooms. The clients chose a bronze metal relief accent wall as well as some colorful finishes and artwork for the entry and hallway.
Exceptional Results
Our clients were simply thrilled with the final product! Not only did they return from their summer vacation to a gorgeous home remodel, but we concluded the project a full week ahead of schedule. As a result, the family was able to move in sooner than planned, giving them plenty of time to acclimate to the renovated space before their kids returned to school. Ultimately, we provided the outstanding results and customer experience that our clients had been searching for.
“We met with many other contractors leading up to signing with Progressive Design Build. When we met Mike, we finally felt safe. We had heard so many horror stories about contractors! Progressive was the best move we could have made. They made our dream house become a reality. Vernon was in charge of our project and everything went better than we expected. Our project was completed earlier than expected, too. Our questions and concerns were dealt with quickly and professionally, the job site was always clean, and all subs were friendly and professional. We had a wonderful experience with Progressive Design Build. We’re so grateful we found them.” – The Mader Family
Grunberger Interiors
Custom, luxurious window treatments which have been tailored to the highest standards are a particular speciality for Grunberger Interiors.
The market is filled with bland, cookie cutter fabric and trim offerings provided by retailers who are salespeople first and designers second. The results are boring and uninspired, and all too often leave the homeowner feeling that something's still missing in their home's design.
Window treatments are so much more than a means to gain privacy and light filtration. Whilst this is very important, before you rush to cover up your windows, you should instead be thinking about how these coverings could be an important vehicle to realize your home's potential and make a powerful design statement.
My approach is to always think out of the box to develop fabric design schemes that are truly unique and eye catching. They tell a story of who you are and what you love. You won't find these selections and combinations at your local store. Your home's decor will shine and your experience of your spaces will be enhanced.
The process begins with my window treatment and soft furnishings consultation, which is a comprehensive design working design session filled with exiting ideas, inspiration and solutions. I bring a bespoke tray of carefully curated fabrics, trims, and wallpaper - your introduction to a world of possibilities.
After a design direction has been established, I will source beautiful fabrics and trims from a variety of trade resources, including the prestigious D&D building in Manhattan.
We shall reconvene and have an enjoyable, creative exchange of ideas and determine the perfect design scheme for each room. Professional measuring, frequent liaison with my bespoke workroom to ensure that every last detail has been addressed, followed by expert installation completes the design process.
Granit Architects + Interiors
We are delighted to have completed the radical transformation of a tired detached property in South Croydon.
When they appointed Granit, our clients were living in the property which had previously been divided into a number of flats.
The historic sub-division had resulted in an extremely poor use of space with redundant staircases, kitchens and bathrooms throughout.
Our clients sought to reconfigure the property back into a single dwelling for his growing family.
Our client had an eye for design and was keen to balance contemporary design whilst maintaining as much of the character of the original house.
Maximising natural light, space and establishing a visual and physical connection were also key drivers for the design. Owing to the size of the property, it became apparent that reconfiguration rather than extension provided the solution to meet the brief.
A metal clad ‘intervention’ was introduced to the rear facade. This created a strong horizontal element creating a visual balance with the vertical nature of the three storey gable.
The metal cladding specified echoed the colour of the red brick string courses tying old with new. Slender frame sliding doors provide access and views of the large garden.
The central circulation space was transformed by the introduction of a double height glazed slot wrapping up the rear facade and onto the roof. This allows daylight to permeate into the heart of the otherwise dark deep floor plan. The staircase was reconfigured into a series of landings looking down over the main void space below and out towards the tree canopies at the rear of the garden.
The introduction of double pocket doors throughout the ground floor creates a series of interconnected spaces and the whitewashed Larch flooring flows seamlessly from room to room. A bold palette of colours and materials lends character and texture throughout the property.
The end result is a spacious yet cosy environment for the family to inhabit for years to come.

The decorative vanity millwork reflects this house’s Victorian heritage. The marriage of opposite design elements – rustic and sophisticated, and traditional and modern – creates eye-pleasing tension in this charming Victorian home. The unexpected accent natural-stone mosaic wall tiles with a modern chevron geometric pattern set the tone, and crisp modern paint palette and chrome fixtures provide a classic backdrop for a couple’s easygoing transitional style and spa bathroom.
