With sweeping views of the Willamette river and Mt. Hood, this Atwater Place condo was designed with a balance of minimalism and livability in mind. A complete kitchen remodel brought a dark interior kitchen to the light and a full furnishings package welcomed Los Angeles transplants home to their new modern and bright residence. Our clients, a retired camera operator for both feature films and television and a producer/production manager on numerous television series including Weeds and The Middle, relocated from their traditionally-styled LA bungalow to Portland in the Summer of 2014. The couple sought a design departure from their long-term California residence and a fresh start for their new life in the South Waterfront. With only two pieces of sentimental furniture and a handful of artwork included in the plan, we set out to create a comfortable and clean-lined furnishings package complimenting the broad southeast views. Organically shaped upholstery pieces juxtaposed with angular steel and wood tables create a soft balance in the open floor plan. Several custom pieces, including a dining table designed by our studio and a custom hand-blown glass chandelier crafted by Scott Schiesel with Lightlite compliment timeless pieces from Knoll, Herman Miller, and B&B Italia. The kitchen is designed to reflect light and create brilliance in a space that is otherwise naturally dark. A material balance of stainless steel, back painted glass, quartz composite, lacquer, and mirror all play their part in creating a vibrant cooking environment. We collectively decided to forgo the traditional island pendant for a linear commercial fixture that provides tremendous light to the prep surface and creates an unexpected architectural element. The mirrored prep island creates the illusion of open space while concealing casework and wine storage on the working side of the kitchen. It is worth noting that this project was designed and installed almost entirely while our clients were still living in LA and wrapping up professional obligations and selling their home. This afforded us the tremendous opportunity to send our clients to showrooms not available in Portland to view key pieces before final specification. Textiles and finish samples were approved via mail and communication took place over e-mail, telephone, and an occasional office visit. arry spends thousands of hours each year tinkering away in his home garage workshop, which sports enough metal-forming and fabrication equipment to furnish a small machine shop: a Webb lathe, a Bridgeport-type mill, a Miller welder, a bead blaster, a Kaiser rotary compressor, drill presses, sanders, metal band saws and a Heberly cold saw. But with the seemingly infinite array of parts, tools, plans and instruction manuals required to satisfy his passion, Larry realized that the end result of his work will only be as good as how organized his shop is. So he did what anyone who takes his workspace seriously would do. He called Lista. Rave reviews help Larry choose. "A friend has Lista products in his home garage and he's been raving about them for years," Larry says. "When we moved into this house, I knew that Lista is what I wanted." Larry's workshop now includes a row of Lista modular drawer storage cabinets, complete with a butcher block top and a kneehole that allows him to use the units as a workbench. "I spent a lot of time looking through Lista's catalog and website, and what Lista said about their products is true; they're as good as advertised!" But Larry is quick to qualify the success of his workspace organization choice by heaping more than a little praise on his Lista solutions representative. "Woody Woodward of Woodward Sales, my Lista distributor, came to the house. We looked at everything I needed to store, and he came up with a plan. And the support doesn't end there. Lista's been great about getting me any replacement parts I need quickly."

Where warmer temperatures and drier conditions make seasonal displays of cut evergreens a non-starter, create a winter windowbox that’s planted with lots of greenery in shades from emerald to lime and add a few seasonal touches. Here a bed of ivy (looks great year round) is tricked-out with white cyclamen, potted-up yellow peppers, and a few winter pansies. Can’t find peppers? Swap in fresh citrus such as kumquats. We think this one’s made for twinkle lights!

A contemporary cabin on Lake Tahoe is designed for all-seasons outdoor living. It was a sign. Quite literally. Our clients, avid outdoor lovers, had always dreamed of owning a vacation home on Lake Tahoe. While paddleboarding during a visit, they caught a glimpse of a “for sale” sign on the shore and a tired and outdated cabin sited unusually close to the lake. The Bay Area residents were captivated by the property and by the notion of summers spent on the lake and winter weekends on the slopes. FGA was enlisted to design a new structure on this special, but steep plot of land. Its hillside location presented some major challenges and considerations. FGA's extensive experience with complex siting proved critical to the success of this project, especially since the clients hoped to preserve as much of the flat land as possible for a lawn, lounge, and hot tub. On the exterior, richly stained Redwood board and batten siding, dark green trim, and Montana stone base boast a more refined ‘Old Tahoe feel’ than the typical mountain cabin. On the lake side, stacked bay windows afford panoramic views from the kitchen and living room with an indoor dining area nestled between them. Glass accordion doors lead from the dining room to the true heart of the home – a covered, all-seasons porch made for lounging in front of the fire pit and enjoying unobstructed lake views while remaining fully-protected from the elements. Beneath the main living level, lake-facing bedrooms and a recreation room are accessible by stairs and a elevator. In addition to the newly constructed main residence, FGA was tasked with remodeling the preexisting boat house on the property. For continuity, the board and batten siding is swathed in the same rich stain and green paint as the new structure, but the interior floorplan is reorganized to allow for a large, open living space with bi-fold doors.
