Michael Merrill Design Studio created this spare yet exquisitely detailed guest suite--striking a delicate balance between masculine and feminine, contemporary and traditional. We made the small room appear much larger by emphasizing its height with the four-poster, all-upholstered canopy bed, which is an original design by Michael Merrill ASID.

With using the walnut cabinets, we tried to keep the sizes as uniform as possible but there were some aspects the client wanted. One of those was the corner appliance garage. Hiding these necessary evils in a beautiful cabinet with easy accessibility was the perfect marriage.

In this contemporary kitchen, we chose to use concrete counter tops through out. The back splash is a glass wine color mosaic tile. The flooring has a wine color back ground with a hint of silver which is reflective.

Taken from the nit and grit of city life along with charming and romantic elements comes Urban Glam. All the way down to the color we have shown what can be when you combine two very opposite styles into one. When creating the design we focused on a balance between the two styles with material choices and elements throughout the space.
The urban style is shown in a few select pieces, first is the custom shelf that was inspired by the Chinese symbol for the phrase “To Create “. This piece has straight, heavy lines and is done in a dark concrete gray color which gives it a great urban feel. It creates space for a few worthy pieces to be placed upon it but itself is the main art piece. The phrase “To Create” can be both urban and glam. It’s urban in the way that we’ve created the city and everything in it, from the buildings to the cars that drive on the roads. However, you can create something glamorous as well, so the meaning of the shelf supports both styles. The second urban element is the wall of acid etched mirrors. They have a nitty-gritty feel to them like that have been around for a long time.
The lighting element in this room is very glam, not only is the chandelier adorned with jewelry, amethyst and clear stones but the glam continues up to the ceiling around the chandelier with beautifully draped fabric. The tufted velvet headboard also screams glam in a romantic, luxurious way.
Other important elements in this Urban Glam room are the beautiful glass art pieces, the matching ivory beauty desk and bedside table, and the wool and silk rug that grounds the whole space.
The attached bath continues the glamourous style with upholstered walls and hand blown glass pendants in rich purples. The mirror above the sink is made from hand cut glass giving it a rough look but the pattern it is placed in a very elegant way.
By combining the nitty-gritty feeling of a city and a charming, romantic air we’ve created the concept Urban Glam. Since this space is in a high-rise condominium located in a downtown area it already has the Urban environment surrounding it and by making it luxurious and romantic it will also be comfortable to live in.

Peacock blue (Benjamin Moore Slate Teal 2058-20) is a favorite color of this client...we add some bling with the lighting & furnishings. We created a traditional and sophisticated room that emulates the vibrancy and character of my lovely client.

Our Minneapolis design studio gave this home office a feminine, fashion-inspired theme. The highlight of the space is the custom built-in desk and shelves. The room has a simple color scheme of gray, cream, white, and lavender, with a pop of purple added with the comfy accent chair. Medium-tone wood floors add a dash of warmth.

Wow. The built-in banquette makes it the magnet gathering place every day and with company. Indoor outdoor velvet and faux leather lasts practically forever even with heavy use. The Tibetan scroll painting uses a Baroque style mirror frame – an eclectic yet perfect marriage. Tortoise vases, seasonal flowers and pillow complete the picture. Please come sit.

This kitchen is a happy marriage of delicate traditional details and solid updated layout. Cabinets are Shenandoah McKinley Maple with Coffee Glaze. Countertop is Antique Mascarello by Formica.

After we had designed the closet to accommodate all of her clothing and accessories, she began considering what to do with the open space above the cabinets. “We’ll put our luggage up there,” her husband said. The look on her face was priceless! She was appalled that he wanted to clutter her beautiful new space with luggage. I may have saved this marriage with a simple suggestion: Put another row of cabinets on top and hide the luggage behind closed doors. The result? He gets the storage he was eyeing, and her closet looks serene and uncluttered.
