Interior Design Trends for 2021/2022
It is largely expected that the interior design trends of 2021/2022 will feature a lot of innovation and experimentation on the part of designers. As a result, these trends will surely present themselves as narkedly unconventional while still posing a challenge to designers to forge designs with a strong aesthetic appeal.
Certain defining features inform the innovative trends that will highlight the approach to interior design in 2021/2022:
• The modern-day, and ever-growing, eco-friendly culture will require that interior designs take the conservation of nature into strong consideration. The application of technology will be in greater harmony with the natural environment.
• Redesigning the interior space will also be influenced by the sweeping changes that are occurring in the modern-day world. Technologies are rapidly evolving and thus rapidly changing our lifestyles. The interior space will have to support these changes and make room for the emergence of future technologies.
• Nostalgia for the retro style will also take centre stage in the 2021/2022 season. Vintage-inspired designs – from the 70's and 90's, for instance – will come out in stark relief.
• The modern-day way of living has become more complex, and this increase in complexity will have to be reflected in the interior space where we live and work. The conventional approach of delineating spaces for the different parts of a home will largely be replaced with a more integrated interior.
• Also, modern technology and the constraints of the pandemic have actually succeeded in opening up the possibility of working from home. More and more companies find this more convenient and cost-effective. Hence, the future home will need to have an integrated workplace.
• The conservationist culture of our time will dictate that the materials used in interior design be made of such things as are eco-friendly. As a result, there will be a decrease in the use of plastics and a strong preference for natural materials such as wood, marble, stone, ceramics, sea grass, bamboo and corn.

This 1500 SF house in the Catskill Mountains is positioned on a gentle slope of rolling farmland and opens to sweeping views of the steep and thickly forested surrounding hillsides. The building uses subtle reinterpretations of vernacular vocabulary to emphasize and participate in the iconic and arcadian beauty of the local context. An intersection of two simple masses with matching pitched roofs is nestled into the hillside, creating a sheltered area between them as it embraces the valley beyond.
The most resonant elements of local built vocabulary–timber frames, natural wood sided forms, and field stone masses–are set against simple interior finishes to underscore the beauty and craftsmanship of the construction techniques and to allow light and space to be focal. A loft and a master bedroom suite give way to a dramatic main volume and hearth generating a feeling of expansiveness within an otherwise efficient and lean program.
Time-tested sustainable techniques of solar orientation, natural ventilation, and extensive use of local materials are teamed with newer technologies: SIP construction, radiant heating, high-efficiency appliances and lighting to achieve substantial reductions of the building’s carbon footprint. The house easily achieved Level II Energy Star Certification and scored high in LEED analysis.

Custom Entertainment Kitchen:
With regular extended family gatherings where well over 75 guests could be found at any given time, this busy family wanted to make sure that everyone from grandma to the newest editions to the family could find a place to eat, drink and relive memories or make new ones. The matriarch of the family is an avid cook that creates dishes for her and the other 3 members of the family everyday and makes enough just in case that stray cousin, nephew or friend stops by unexpectedly.
The main requirement of the 300 square feet of space was storage. Vertical storage using the 10 foot ceilings, the oversized island and a walk in pantry helped solve this problem.
This high end, professional grade kitchen is grounded by a custom Turkish travertine floor inlaid with green fossil stone.
The custom maple cabinets, that feature soft close drawers and pull out shelves in all lower cabinets, provide plenty of storage and are detailed with two different custom toned stains (darker for lower and lighter for uppers). The cabinets, designed by Mark Hermogeno and fabricated by San Jose's WoodenBridge Fine Joinery, are finished off with Liberty stainless steel pulls that match the curvature of the handles on both the U-line under-cabinet bar refrigerator and the
Thermador stainless-steel professional grade appliances. The cook of the family requested for the 6 burner Thermador range be placed where she can interact with everyone.
Technology was another important key to this kitchen. Bose speakers in the ceiling are tied into a central audio system and for easy clean up, toe kicks feature central vaccuum outlets where you can simply sweep the dust and dirt away without ever using a dustpan.

This unique space in lower-Manhattan offers sweeping views to the east, west and south. The loft had been gut-renovated in the 1980s, but was in need of updating. Modern finishes, luxurious furnishings and technology upgrades were made throughout the apartment. Included in the re-fresh was a luxurious new master bathroom with a two-person walk-in shower, a soaking tub with a dramatic city view, heated marble floors and an integrated television in the vanity mirror. In the kitchen, the custom cabinetry remained in place, but new countertops, backsplash, lighting and appliances were added. Electric shades, integrated lighting and audio/video systems completed the renovation.
