Featured in Feb/Mar 2013 issue of Organic Gardening Magazine, this Boston-area courtyard functions as an entryway, parking space, driveway turnaround, and outdoor room. New York bluestone planks set into a sea of pea gravel can bear the weight of vehicles while allowing rainwater to permeate the ground, preventing run-off. Curving 7-foot-high green walls of shade-loving native plants create privacy and beauty, while native birch trees (Betula papyrifera) in the entry planters provide a handsome complement to the four-story Silver LEED-certified house by Wolf Architects, Inc.

Transitional white tile tub/shower combo photo in Chicago with dark wood cabinets, solid surface countertops, an undermount sink and flat-panel cabinets

We completely renovated a simple low-lying house for a university family by opening the back side with large windows and a wrap-around patio. The kitchen counter extends to the exterior, enhancing the sense of openness to the outside. Large overhanging soffits and horizontal cedar siding keep the house from overpowering the view and help it settle into the landscape.
An expansive maple floor and white ceiling reinforce the horizontal sense of space.

Custom lamp mounted on aluminum architectural post. The paver garden walk makes for easy, clean and safe footing throughout the garden. Field stone boulders protect the lamp post from wayward vehicles including snowplows. Photo by Landscape artist: Brett D. Maloney.

The new, five foot wide stamped concrete walk eliminates the cramped, overgrown feeling the original space had. The new pavement continues down the side of the driveway improving functionality. Visitors can now enter and exit vehicles without stepping in the lawn or beds.
