Project Overview:
This project is a vacation home for a family to enjoy the beauty of Swauk Prairie in Hidden Valley near Cle Elum, Kittitas County, Washington. It was a highly collaborative project between the owners, Syndicate Smith (Steve Booher lead), Mandy Callaway, and Merle Inc. The Pika-Pika exterior scope was pre-treated with a fire retardant for good measure due to being located in a high-fire zone on the east side of the Cascade mountain range, about 90 minutes east of Seattle.

Nestled into the hills of Portola Valley, California the structures open space carefully defines and details outdoor rooms and interior space. While this form naturally echoes its landscape and beauty it was able to maintain and score Gold in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
The Windy Hill Heaven residents incorporated sustainable aspects such as:
STRUCTURE // Passive-solar design, spray foam insulation, structurally insulated panel called (SIPs), and high efficiency low e windows
ELECTRICITY // Photovoltaic solar-panel array tied to the grid allowing this home to be net zero, Energy Star appliances, and energy efficient fans and lighting
HEATING AND COOLING // In-floor radiant hot-water and a highly efficient fireplace
SUSTAINABLE FEATURE // Native landscaping locally sourced building materials, low-VOC materials, paint and sealers. In all making this a very ECO-logically designed home

Like most old homes, the layout of the original home included many small rooms that weren't ideal for modern living. The old kitchen and dining room were combined to allow for an oversized dining room and to make way for the pantry and coat closet that mark the beginning of the new addition.
Wide plank white oak floors were added to provide consistency between the old and new portions of the home and were blended with the original oak floors in the original portions of the house. Floors were all refinished with a no-VOC oil finish for a modern, matte look.

Strand woven bamboo flooring is made by compressing "strands" of the bamboo strips under intense pressure, while using a heat-sensitive low-VOC adhesive. Bamboo poles are split, shredded into individual strands, and fused under a cold press of 2,500 tons of pressure. After the curing process, the block is sliced into flooring with T+G system and coatings applied.
Strand Woven bamboo is conditioned by soaking in Boric acid. We put the cut bamboo in containers of boric acid, live cells will soak the boric acid then make it pest proof in all cells of bamboo. Once boric acid is gone through the cells, they will dry them. Once totally dried, they crash the entire pole and compress the fibers with adhesive.

Five words: it’s all about the glass. Vintage takes its cues from antique power-pole insulator glass. We make beautiful pieces of recycled glass in vintage spiral or fluted shapes and pair them with our simple chrome fixtures. It’s just the right amount of vintage and modern in one sleek, eco-friendly package.
