An art gallery was designed with low windows to allow natural light to permeate while protecting the sensitive art from harmful direct sunlight. It is these careful details that, in combination with the striking lineation of the home, create a harmonious alliance of function and design.

Built on Frank Sinatra’s estate, this custom home was designed to be a fun and relaxing weekend retreat for our clients who live full time in Orange County. As a second home and playing up the mid-century vibe ubiquitous in the desert, we departed from our clients’ more traditional style to create a modern and unique space with the feel of a boutique hotel. Classic mid-century materials were used for the architectural elements and hard surfaces of the home such as walnut flooring and cabinetry, terrazzo stone and straight set brick walls, while the furnishings are a more eclectic take on modern style. We paid homage to “Old Blue Eyes” by hanging a 6’ tall image of his mug shot in the entry.

This property was transformed from an 1870s YMCA summer camp into an eclectic family home, built to last for generations. Space was made for a growing family by excavating the slope beneath and raising the ceilings above. Every new detail was made to look vintage, retaining the core essence of the site, while state of the art whole house systems ensure that it functions like 21st century home.
This home was featured on the cover of ELLE Décor Magazine in April 2016.

A great feature to the loft is the wall dividing the guest room from the main living space. Being open across the top means that natural light from the living area illuminates the otherwise window-less room.
Much of Weiss's art collection comes from artists that she knows or has worked with, and in many cases they are represented at Weisshouse. The large format photograph by Chris Karavaugh is a purchase from Mendelson Gallery, a local gallery nearby to her home. The scale of the piece stands up to the open volume above, whereas something smaller could get lost. Tailored black armchairs round out the area, while a vintage Karabagh rug adds a dose of color.

The feature wall in the living area sets the tone for the apartment.
Weiss took advantage of the vast wall space by creating a gallery display of art. Spanning the gamut of styles and origins, the pieces are hung asymmetrically, lending to the organic feel of the space. While the thought of fitting all of her artwork was a bit daunting in the beginning, this is now Weiss's favorite spot in her home. "I somehow managed to fit it in and actually add to it from time to time," she says.

What a cute and fun work of art! “Happiness is like a carrot”, yes, how about live a life as simple as a bunny’s? This creative piece is quite versatile and would be a great addition to a child’s room, but could also be hung proudly in any other room of your house. When you see this piece, it will surely bring a smile to your face so it would work particularly well in and office, study area or other location where you might need a quick lift to your mood. Since the colors are subdued, it works great with any existing design elements and will blend in nicely with any other art styles you are already displaying in your home. The white background means it will work especially well against dark walls or even in rooms where you have hung intricate wallpaper patterns.

OPPORTUNITY:
The client felt weighed down by the family heirlooms that she couldn’t bear to part with, but couldn’t imagine them in her own home.
RESULTS
We created a “new traditional” - integrating old family heirlooms and discovering the beauty among the relics. She is now proud to show the history that tells the story of one family.
