Sorry I don't have other opinions on the trim except to say that I normally err on the side of simplicity. The floor above is white oak with dark brown stain, you could try a combination of coffee and ebony to get a deep color.

Can u tell me more how this ceiling is achieved?
  • plannerman

There are a lot of pictures on here of similar "step" ceilings. It can be achieved by either of the 2 following methods, both of which involve creating a border at the edge of the ceiling: (1) layering a border of 1/4" thick drywall over the drywall on the ceiling, screwing it into the ceiling joists, and then taping/mudding/sanding/painting the drywall seams; or (2) nailing mitered wood/mdf trim of the desired width into the ceiling joists to make a similar box border around the edge of the room; you then caulk and paint the miter joints. It's pretty simple actually, and adds a neat architectural effect. If you have low ceilings, you can paint the step ceiling the same color as the walls. It gives the illusion that the ceiling is higher.

How is the 1" bead added to the casing? Is it a separate piece or is it routed out of the 1x6? Thanks!

It's an antique rug; can't answer the question of source.

If constrained by narrow passage, I recommend casing from wall to wall with flat material.

  • Deb0125
what size casing did you use for doorways to bedrooms or closets? same 1x6 with 1" back build up ? if use narrower flat piece would you alter the build up size? and thank you so much for your input.

The wider trim might have a whimsical look in a smaller scale room. You'd want to accentuate it perhaps with high-gloss paint.

    2. Skinny trim. Please don't settle for 3-inch baseboards and 2¼-inch casings. Trim has so much to offer and can really make a room special. Solution (shown): Think about different profiles and go for the larger sizes. Doing so will add a richness to your rooms that you didn't think was possible.
