These birch logs are reclaimed from the site. Decorative in the summer, then burned in the fireplace in the winter.

These birch logs were reclaimed from the site, not purchased. There are a number of online sources for birch logs though.

The painting is by the late, great Harvey Quaytman and was graciously on loan from the Nielsen Gallery in Boston.

Material of fireplace - What is the material of the stone surrounding the fireplace, not the stone mantel, but the inner layer?

The fireplace surround is slate. The two piers are granite and the heath is blue stone. Thanks for your interest!

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Shoshana Gosselin added this to Dress Up Your Hearth for Fireplace Season
Your hearth accessories are like jewelry for your fireplace, so look for finishes that complement each other. Purchasing coordinated hearth accessories is an easy first step.
Amy Renea added this to Rustic Country Style Meets Sleek City Chic
Birch's lighter hue and matte finish make it a great wood to use in modern designs. Try cutting a single log into thin slices for coasters, or simply pile a load in the fireplace. Though this space has plenty of rough and rustic elements to add texture, the look is still modern thanks to generous proportions, clean surfaces and minimalist styling.
Samantha Schoech added this to Sparking Interest with Nonworking Fireplaces
Fill it with wabi-sabi decorative logs. They hint at coziness, aren't too formal and require no matches.
Laura Gaskill added this to How to Savor Your Beautifully Imperfect Home
Embrace wabi-sabi style. The wabi-sabi philosophy, which has its roots in Japan, finds beauty in imperfection and impermanence. The flowers whose petals are just beginning to turn brown, the thick slab of wood with an interesting crack running down the center — these are more highly valued than something flawless. Isn't that refreshing?
Jenn Hannotte / Hannotte Interiors added this to Camp Nostalgia Makes a Stake at Home
Or go a little further: The rough-hewn columns on either side of this fireplace give the impression of two tree trunks climbing out of the floor. We see very few straight lines in nature, and playing with this in architectural elements (and in the art, centered) can subconsciously relax your eyes and mind.
Mary Jo Bowling added this to Stack in Style With a Creative Woodpile
This Boston fireplace, by Marcus Gleysteen Architects, came to life with an asymmetrical log arrangement. At least some of the logs appear to be just pieces of curled bark, a great idea if you want to quickly remove the pieces and light a fire.
