this is so lovely! what did you use on the ceilings? I'm trying to figure out how to buy wood to achieve this slat- effect- it's not T&G is it? do you need a specific cut (rift?) to complete the look? thanks so much.

This is a custom built bookshelf so it is, unfortunately, not available anywhere. Design is pretty simple however for a good cabinet maker to make. Hope this helps. --th

Thanks for all your answers. Is the wood in this cabinet birch? Solid?

Yes, a down-draft vent unit was used for this island cooktop. --Tom Hurt

    Hi Ramsey,

The ceiling is custom milled 2" douglas fir shiplap, sealed in it's natural color. I hope this helps!

These are part of the fixtures. Very nice lights in this project -- requested by Owners. i don't have manufacturer's name at close reach. Let us know if you cannot find them but are still interested, and we can look at archives perhaps. Best, Tom Hurt

In the far corner of this image is the mudroom entrance for this part of the house. Also barely visible is a built-in cafe type booth in the kitchen. The room opposite the bookshelves is the living room.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Lawrence Karol added this to Expert Talk: Wall Dividers Pull Rooms TogetherMay 23, 2012

Organize a series of rooms. "When we refurbished this midcentury modern brick house, we used cabinets instead of traditional walls to organize the back entry, mudroom, kitchen, family dining booth, kitchen office/work areas — two of them — and the transition to the living and dining area," says Tom Hurt of Hurt Partners Architects. "The bookcase is made of a clear finished maple," he points out, "and parts of this cabinet system have solid panels, other parts obscured glass, and towards the rear [in this photo] is a large pin board for the kids' projects, family photos and such." The ceiling material is custom-milled clear fir, and the floor is honed Italian limestone.

John Hill added this to 24 Amazing Walls of BooksJanuary 24, 2012

This wall of books is freestanding, acting as a divider between the kitchen and living room.

Ah, the bookcase wall - I love it so much. And how convenient, too (though a cookbook collection that big would be pretty daunting).
