If you have hats that have been stacked or stored improperly, take heart: Most headgear has a good memory.

          2. Look for little-used spaces. What better place for a hat collection than on a shelf above a doorway? These hats not only add character to the room, they’re also easy to grab on the way out.

Add the unexpected. Here a collection of vintage hats creates an interesting scene between rooms.

Polished wood. Go back to the basics with a product like Murphy's Oil Soap or a beeswax-based floor polish to give your home that good, clean church-pew smell and make the wood gleam.

A birdcage. A vintage birdcage introduces a large dose of texture and a conversation-starting shape over this dining room table. Open your eyes to all sorts of sculptural objects that could take on a bulb or surround a chandelier.

Add a dash of island glamour. For a refined yet relaxed look, take inspiration from the colonial-style homes of the tropics. Pictured here is the Bahamas home of interior decorator India Hicks, decorated in the French Caribbean style. To achieve this look, use elegantly curved dark wood furniture and decorate with quirky island touches such as a shelf of straw hats and a rattan birdcage.

One of my favorite wood floors. Am concerned with kid friendly and life's mishaps. Also like the shelving around doorway.

SUNKEN LIVING ROOM: (Stair Transition) In order to avoid having the look of a sunken room, especially an octagon shaped one, I would like to implement something like this between the dining room to the living room. In the opening of this bookshelf doorway would be the steps. I would like to do this on both sides of the sunken room where the steps are. The stairs leading down to the basement (the troublesome ones) would be in between these two bookcase walls.
