Rustic Eclecticism Kitchen Remodel: Chester Springs, PAContemporary Kitchen, Philadelphia

A dynamic and multifaceted entertaining area, this kitchen is the center for family gatherings and its open floor plan is conducive to entertaining. The kitchen was designed to accomodate two cooks, and the small island is the perfect place for food preparation while family and guests interact with the host. The informal dining area was enlarged to create a functional eating area, and the space now incorporates a sliding French door that provides easy access to the new rear deck. Skylights that change color on demand to diminish strong, unwanted sunlight were also incorporated in the revamped dining area. A peninsula area located off of the main kitchen and dining room creates a great space for additional entertaining and storage.

Character cherry cabinetry, tiger wood hardwood flooring, and dry stack running bond slate backsplash make bold statements within the space. The island top is a 3" thick Brazilian cherry end grain top, and the brushed black ash granite countertops elsewhere in the kitchen create a beautiful contrast against the cabinetry. A buffet area was incorporated into the adjoining family room to create a flow from space to space and to provide additional storage and a dry bar. Here the character cherry was maintained in the center part of the cabinetry and is flanked by a knotty maple to add more visual interest. The center backsplash is an onyx slate set in a basketweave pattern which is juxtaposed by cherry bead board on either side.

The use of a variety of natural materials lends itself to the rustic style, while the cabinetry style, decorative light fixtures, and open layout provide the space with a contemporary twist. Here bold statements blend with subtle details to create a warm, welcoming, and eclectic space.

Inspiration for a contemporary kitchen remodel in Philadelphia with stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, a single-bowl sink, open cabinets, medium tone wood cabinets, gray backsplash and slate backsplash —  Houzz

The base of the island is 43" x 28" and the Brazilian cherry top is extended 12" away from the base to allow for knee space.

Love the stone and wood cabinet look! Are these hickory cabinets and how has the backsplash been to clean?

The cabinets are Northern knotty cherry hardwood. The splash is a quartzite stone which has been sealed. To date, I have heard no negative response from my client regarding the maintenance or cleaning. I have done many of this type and style in the past with no issues.....

Beautiful Kitchen! Our first big kitchen " demo " starts soon & all materials but the backsplash have been picked. I've searched so many stores and pictures & this is the one I keep coming back the stone color, texture & style & think it would go well with the "Rocky Mountain" Granite countertop (attached photo). Some have steered me away from any brick or material that is not " smooth " ( keeping it clean by the cooktop & managing dust, etc..)
All of that said, I'm determined to find a way to make this material work....Thanks for any ideas! Kathy.

Do you find that textured backsplash hard to clean?

Unfortunately we are unsure of the wall color. It was selected by the customer post design and renovation.

The countertops are Black Ash granite with a brushed finish. The island's counter is 3" thick Brazilian cherry.
