What did you use to seal the concrete blocks to prevent moisture penetration?

We're still in the programming phase of our design. We're still in consideration for material set. I love the look, but I have concerns about moisture, efficiency and cracking. Looking for 3rd party thoughts on this since this is all new to us.

Like: Nice use of cinderblock. Indoor/outdoor transition. Dislike: river stone "moat" between living room door and patio. A bit boxy overall.
