5. Old spices. Are there jars of spices gathering dust in the back of your pantry that you can’t even remember buying? Chances are, many of them need to go. The shelf life of most spices is one to two years; after that they lose flavor. If you have any doubt about whether a spice is still fresh (and you can’t find a date on the bottle), open it up and take a whiff — if the scent is very faint, it’s probably too old to use.

I like spices laying down in drawer as opposed to standing up in a tall narrow cabinet.
