    yes, this is site made concrete. there is a recess at the top that allows the rocks to sit inside and hide the gas. concrete is a good choice for doing a curve...otherwise you need to find a very small tile that can make a curve

    this is a masonry fireplace box built on site. the hearth is concrete that has been built on site, with a recessed "pan" the recessed area we placed a gas line. you can purchase H or I gas inserts for gas the depth of the recess is based on that. we put fire rock (sometimes we use glass beads instead) around and over the pipe. we built a custom metal "hood" that a typical insulated flue could connect to. feel free to call me at the office if you have more questions, 214-691-8388.
