    yes, this is site made concrete. there is a recess at the top that allows the rocks to sit inside and hide the gas. concrete is a good choice for doing a curve...otherwise you need to find a very small tile that can make a curve

    this is a masonry fireplace box built on site. the hearth is concrete that has been built on site, with a recessed "pan"...in the recessed area we placed a gas line. you can purchase H or I gas inserts for gas fireplaces...so the depth of the recess is based on that. we put fire rock (sometimes we use glass beads instead) around and over the pipe. we built a custom metal "hood" that a typical insulated flue could connect to. feel free to call me at the office if you have more questions, 214-691-8388. I like the simplicity of this but I think we want the ledge to be a little more functional.
