These are black iron nipple fittings(maybe 8") into union fittings(the bolts). All this can be bought at a place like Lowes.

Not quite as easy as going to Lowe's - 1 1/2" solid threaded rod and nuts purchased from industrial supply, I believe McMaster Carr. Just de-greasing the thick heavy grease from these rods is a major chore to get started. Custom base plate feet welded by our shop. The character of the wire brushed reclaimed fir and scale of threaded rod make this what it is. A lot more time and labor in this than you might think.

Local architectural salvage companies (our local also salvages the old timber joists from city buildings). You might also check with smaller lumber mills in your area.

1 1/2" threaded rod for the vertical metal pieces....some type of flange @ the bottom(to rest on floor). Show picture @ HW store.

I have done projects like this with reclaimed wood and ACME threaded rod. It is a cool threaded rod with a course thread, used most commonly for industrial applications, machining, like vices etc. Google ACME threaded rod. Like this.    It can be purchased from Mcmaster carr as well as a lot of other suppliers. They make right and left handed threads, you need to make sure you get the correct ,matching nuts.

      14. The contractors at this office made this fabulous bookshelf out of salvaged timbers and large threaded rod. The lime-green wall really makes the bookshelf pop.

Think big and fill the wall with your storage. These free-standing shelves with incorporated desk surface were made from reclaimed, thick planks on long, threaded rods.

Load your kids' rooms with shelving; they’re going to need it to help them stay organized. Plus, starting them with basic organization tools will help them kick off the year on the right foot. This design is a great space saver as it includes both shelving and a desk.
