I think the rods are expandable to about 38"

Colleen, I'm looking to flank these with stationary side panels. I don't like the look of a rod spanning the top for panels I won't open. I am looking to soften the sides. The windows will have 2.5" wood blinds. Why do you say to use a full rod on a single window?

drapery question - love the draperies, but am confused how they are made. You answered previously that they are simple rod pockets, but they look like they have pleats. Can you tell me how these are sewn to look like they have pleats, instead of all the gathering that rod pockets usually look like? thanks.

Below is what the original poster had said:

love the simple, drape of these curtains, the heading looks shorter than the norm, is it an unstuffed cartridge pleat?

Those look like cartridge pleats... there's a special tape you can use to achieve this loo,

Hi, home owner already had that one, but there are several places that have similar ones, but are to the trade only. Zentique and eloquence are a couple off the top of my head, but I have several sources.

They are about 24" . You can get them at bed bath and beyond. They extend from like 12". To 36"

If you can't find a good chunky rod like this in the size you want, buy one you love, and have it cut down. Even the extendable ones can be cut to shorter lengths.

Actually the settee was purchased at an antique store (though it is not an antique) and the chairs are from Four Hands.

Colleen, this room is lovely. I've been wondering about the curtains. Is there a name for this treatment of hanging them with a short rod so they can add color/texture to the room while not for window coverage?

Lovely room,I am interested in painting the walls white in my sitting - room and I am looking at purchasing a dark wood framed sofa and chairs with a fairly light caramel coloured fabric. There is a contrasting small patterned fabric on the backs and sides of the chairs in a dark grey and cream. This room is lovely with the warm colours but I am concerned that mine might appear to heavy with the dark wood trim and darker fabric. I would love to know your opinion so I do this white room properly.Thank you so much.

Sounds like if you are trying to duplicate the room in the picture the colors are too dark...if you post pictures it will be easier to give suggestions..the gray and caramel may suggest a different wall color shade than white ....if the couch and chairs can be treated as accent color then you may need more white in other areas

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Lisa Frederick added this to So Your Style Is: Traditional
Style Secret: Symmetry The traditional look is all about balance, from architecture to furniture placement. Furnishings tend to be grouped in formal arrangements that invite conversation, and positioned along the axis of a room. Your pieces don’t all have to match, but this isn’t the style for you if you’re drawn to an offbeat, eclectic mix.Make it fresh: Although you don’t want to stray too far from symmetrical placement, there are subtle ways to keep a room from feeling static. Prop a tall mirror against one wall, hang art in a grouping that creates a sense of motion, or angle a cocktail table next to an armchair. Here, the irregular shape of the rug loosens the room just enough to give it energy.
Kristy Woodson Harvey and Beth Woodson added this to 7 Tips for Lovely Traditional Living Room Lighting
Don't forget the dimmers. Especially for general lighting centered in the middle of the room, dimmer switches are essential. That way, you can achieve any type of mood you want. For bright, cheerful illumination, turn up the lights full blast. For nighttime events, turn down the lights to make a traditional scheme, like in this French country room, even more romantic — and appearances even more flattering.

What Houzzers are commenting on:

Lem added this to Window Treatments
I like these shorter curtain rods. We could use these in the sunroom instead of having one long curtain rod on the largest section of window. Or....the short rods could be placed on walls on each side of the windows. This way there’s a nice curtain and nothing at all is taken away from any light coming through the windows.
Amanda Rissew added this to Traditional Style
There is a lot of fancy aspects, blues, and a chandelier
