I want to do new floors to look like this. Not so much the checker pattern, but solid with the look of the front square all scratched up.

Annie Sloan makes a chalk paint used on floors and has a good selection of colors. Here is the website: http://www.anniesloan.com/

Consider the green painters tape now available at most home improvement stores. think it is "frog" brand. it's more expensive but you end up with much cleaner lines.

Janell Beals - House of Fifty added this to Painted Wood Floors
A beautiful country classic. The worn black and white paint on the floor could not have more character. Painted floors seem to look best when the paint begins to wear off, showing the planks of the flooring.
Natalie Myers added this to DIY: Paint Your Floor for a Fresh Update
In my opinion, painted wood floors start to look their best after some wear. When the paint has chipped and grown thin in spots, it seems to have been part of the house for a very long time.

8. Trace on a checkerboard pattern. Painting older, worn wooden floor can be a cost-effective way to create a new look. A checkerboard pattern is fairly straightforward to accomplish and looks right at home in a kitchen, sunroom or child’s bedroom. Black and white, blue and white, and yellow and white are foolproof combos to try. Don’t want to paint your floors? Try out the pattern on a basic natural-fiber rug instead.9. Cover plumbing with a café curtain. Not so fond of your lower cabinets? Replace a few of the doors with cute café curtains. They are not expensive, but if you can whip them up yourself, so much the better!
