I don't know if you are in US but here you can go to one of the big box stores - Lowe's or Home Depot, for example and get catalogs that tell you cabinet sizes. From that you can look at the different styles of cabinets - drawers, pull outs, doors, speciality ones - like a lift for the kitchen aide mixer or pull out pantry cabinets, etc. The choices are vast. You can decide what you want. Typical base cabinets are 24" deep. You can put two back to back to make the island 4' wide and if you want it even wider you can have an empty space in the middle that is not too wide or get creative and have pantry pull outs that use up some of that or you could even have custom made doors that leave a long space that could be used to hid long things. Once you figure out the cabinets you want, you have them installed - with electrical outlets if you want that feature. Then the granite folks come out and measure the base cabinets to ensure the granite fits properly. The big box stores sell granite but you'll have to go look at the actual slab somewhere else before they cut. There is no limit to the size of island you could create in this way.

You can put many cabinets side by side to make the length as long as you want it. Each cabinet width varies from as little as 3" in to 42" - you'd just want to make sure both sides had the same lenth if you do back to back cabinets to get the 48" or wider width. If you want narrower width there are cabinets that are only 12" deep -- you could have 24" on one side and 12" on the other -- back to back - for as much length as you want.

This slab is approx 5'x10'. Depending on the dimensions of your island and slab, you may only have to use one piece of material.

Can panels like these be put on any type of refrigertor ?
  • Jerry hendrickson
I'm an appliance guy here. You can place panels like this on any "panel ready" fridge. Many brands make models that are ready to accept custom made panels, but not all brands and models offer this option. Check with your local independent appliance dealer.
The one in this picture is a built in model, possibly a Sub-Zero.

Okay, thank you so much for your response... My house is just like this...
I thought maybe is was to much space in between island to back of couch 55", I have my living room next to kitchen with couch as divider and French doors winging in left...
Do you happen to know how much that space is from island to back of couch?

Based on the dimensions given earlier of the island (5x9.6), from window to wall I would say 16-17 feet and from oven to end of island 13.6-14.6 feet.
  • lino412

I would say 16ft from oven WALL to end of island. Looks almost square so I agree with 16-17 left to right as well.
