Work space + guest room

Instead of boring holes for cords to reach the plugs, 2 of these wire harnesses were let into the top--much easier to get to. They also have phone and ethernet connections. The lip keeps things like pencils from rolling off the back into pencil oblivion.

The white oak work surface is deep enough to be a functional work top; by having it go straight across and not follow the bays, it's easy to access the windows. There is a little lip at the back to keep things from rolling off top.

The room doubles as a guest room with this sleeper sofa. The electrical on this wall was brought up to the counters to provide convenient charging stations for phones. The tiny dot on the left cabinet side is a push button switch for the LED lights at top.

The blue doors cover a wardrobe with cubbies and a pull-out closet rod. There is a mirror mounted on the inside of the right door.

There were 2 goals in outfitting this room with casework. The first was to make a work space comfortable enough for 2 people to work side by side. The second was to create a guest room wardrobe and storage space.

Hint for Duravit sinks--to perfectly size the vanity to the sink, the cabinetmaker should have the sink on hand, as the dimensions can and do vary. The middle drawer is a U-shape to fit around the drain, but there's still enough room for some towels.

The new bathroom. Cabinets are stained beech. The outlet was pulled into a special cubby for toothbrushes to keep them from cluttering up the sink surface.

More ugly. The closet in this bathroom is going away, and I am going to use this useless corner to store things that used to live in the closet. The sink will be a Duravit on a wall-hung vanity with 2 drawers underneath for more storage.

View #2 of Ugh. The door in the bathroom is to a closet, which impinges on the small room on the other side of the wall. It is going away...

A chimney that couldn't go away limited the amount of storage on the right side, so shallow shelves on the right balance the closet on the left. The cabinet on the far right has a hanging rod and shelf behind the door. The small slab finish panel to the right of the window seat is actually a small cabinet.

The only way to get any storage in this room was to create a wall of angled cabinets sized exactly to the space--square boxes with fillers wouldn't be worth the effort. Each tall door covers a hanging rod and shelf. The only concession to the space is that the doors have to be hinged on the right to allow them to open fully. Design by Louse M. The stainless steel laminate door is on a touch latch, and reveals a great place for baking sheets. The problem of accommodating a light switch becomes a great opportunity.

Details matter. Note the light switches on the left side of the oven cabinet. The electrical box would impinge on the oven, so the cabinet was widened by 4", and the oven is moved to the right. A stainless steel laminate door slab matches the appliance.

The cavity for the fridge is pretty deep, so instead of making the adjacent base cabinet a standard 24" deep, it features two 30" drawers under the warming drawer. Similarly, the upper cabinet is deeper than standard to hold a microwave.

Basic cabinets, with custom details: height of uppers fits the space, the scribe on the right cabinet allows the baseboard to die into the cabinet run, and full-height fillers at the dishwasher allow the kick to neatly end at the dishwasher.
