Washington Park Exotic EscapeEclectic Home Office, Denver

This office is modern and cultural at the same time. The shelving and mantel are used to exhibit items from their travels. The tile around the fireplace brings a sense of deco to the room along with the desk and guest bench.

1. The Work-From-Home Dedicated OfficeWith more people telecommuting either every day or on a regular basis, the dedicated office space has become a necessity for many work-from-homers. This one is full of favorite personal effects collected on travels, like the Moroccan rug and objects on the shelves. It’s a good reminder that hard work can pay off with a rewarding trip in the future. See more of this office

6. Introduce a feature ceiling. Last week, designer Jennifer Ott made the case that accent walls are here to stay. But if doing that isn’t enough of a visual statement for you, consider looking up toward the “fifth wall.” Here, in the same home that features the hand-carved doors, the homeowner applied a tomato hue to the ceiling to bring interest without taking away from the artwork featured throughout the room. To the left of the entryway is the wife’s office. Flanking the door are two built-in bookcases showcasing an assortment of Mexican folk art. “We wanted a place to display her collection without it taking over the home,” Schroder says. “If you have a nice dedicated space, it makes you appreciate everything more, and it gives it the highlight it deserves.“I’m a big believer in painting your ceilings in color,” says Schroder, who added a tomato-red hue to the “fifth wall” to introduce more color and warm up the space without detracting from the collection of artwork. The wood-burning fireplace, the only architectural detail left from the original house, was gussied up with terra-cotta tiles.
