West Coast HamptonsTraditional Kitchen, San Diego

The kitchen, breakfast room and family room are all open to one another. The kitchen has a large twelve foot island topped with Calacatta marble and features a roll-out kneading table, and room to seat the whole family. The sunlight breakfast room opens onto the patio which has a built-in barbeque, and both bar top seating and a built in bench for outdoor dining. The large family room features a cozy fireplace, TV media, and a large built-in bookcase. The adjoining craft room is separated by a set of pocket french doors; where the kids can be visible from the family room as they do their homework.

The island was completely custom. We sourced the Calacatta marble from Unique Stone Imports in San Diego. The design of the island was done by IS Architecture and custom built by the contractor.

Thank you for your response! Beautiful work! I'm working with a space roughly 19x14 and trying to fit an island. The shorter dimension (14) is actually part of an open hallway so only cabinets on the L like this....

Could you tell me perhaps the distance from island to that circular dining table, also the distance of that table to the patio doors on the one wall and then the opposite had the built in desk.... Would be helpful. Thanks

Is it a honed or polished finish?

I believe it is a honed finish. That makes it less porous.

We sourced the pendants from PW Vintage Lighting. It's the Holophane Hanging Lamp, 14" with Glass Diffuser.

The quartz is what you see on the side counters, and it's from Caesarstone. The island is carrara marble.

Thanks for your question. The island is 12 feet long by 5 feet wide. But the cabinetry below is about 4 feet wide.

The island is Calacatta marble. The color and veining can vary depending on the slab. This slab is white with grey veining.

Monochromatic white kitchens have been extremely popular over the last few years, but one of the challenges of decorating in a single color is that you need to use elements other than color — such as texture, sheen and pattern — to visually break up the space and make it interesting. That’s fine in most rooms, but in a kitchen you need to consider durability and how easy the surfaces are to maintain. This limits the materials you can use — a finish with a pronounced texture, for example, can be difficult to clean. Color, then, can be your friend in the kitchen because it’s a simple way to add some zing. And an accent paint color on the island is relatively easy to change out later if you want to.This kitchen by IS Architecture is mostly white, but the touches of vegetal green, most notably on the island, give the space life and, in my view, make it more visually interesting than it would be if it was clad all in white.Shop for kitchen islands and carts
