Compare hardness of surface by Oak + or _ the basic standard. ( unless your looking for a rustic finish the harder the better) When using an engineered flooring make sure solid stair trim / and or solid boards are available. If using darker colors consider un finished and finish with oil for best results to avoid fogging of polyurethane finishes. Floating, my preference for diy install is best done with full 3/4 engineered flooring to avoid flexing common to thinner materials.

We specifically put Acacia floors in our new home due to durability. Four family members, 2 adults and 2 children, and 1 dog. We have been VERY pleased with our floors and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
