Whole house remodel, Silver Spring MDFarmhouse Exterior, DC Metro

EARTH AND SKY. In many whole-house remodels, homeowners must choose between keeping what they love and getting what they need. We look for ways you won't have to make that choice--as in this home, which kept its abundant garden and manageable footprint and gained major space and naturally beautiful materials in the master bedroom and bath, kitchen, sunroom, and more.

What technique was used to paint the brick? Our home has dull brown brick and we want to brighten it up some. Love the look of your!
  • Sarah Blasser
I would also love to know the technique your painters used on the brick!

This home was a unique situation. The brick that everyone loves was a part of the original home's design. We built an addition onto the home and our great team actually hand painted in the white wash to make all the bricks match. Thank you for your interest!

Here's the thing-there are no informational videos on how to do brick like this and I think we all would LOVE to see it done! I want to do this but my husband isn't convinced. If we had an example of it I think he would be more on board. And we'd all appreciate it. Heck, I'd even pay to get a chance to see it done. I contacted a masonry worker to do a light mortar wash for a similar effect but they've never done it either and I think they thought I was nuts. They want $1k to do something they've never done before-and I am confident I can do something like this. Any help would be appreciated! This is the only thing I've found so far with a little bit of explanation "Tactfully coating areas with thin and thick paint, then scrubbing or washing away the wet paint in some areas." HTH.

Could you tell us the process of painting the brick like this? I can't find anyone in my area who has any idea how to do anything like this.

The brick you see here was a part of the original home - we did not build it so I do not know the exact name. When we added the addition onto the home our team hand painted the new bricks to perfectly match

We did not purchase a new door for this home. Instead, we reused an existing door and reinstalled it in a new location.

The brick is from the original home - when we added on the addition we had to hand paint the brick to match!
  • Joanne Care

Hi Yes we got that about how you did an addition and hand painted the brick to match the existing brick. I think what everyone wants to know is how did you achieve the look to match the existing brick? Did you water down the paint and wipe some off or pressure wash it wet, etc.. please share. Thanks

Yes - we did build an addition onto this home. Here is a bit of the story - An empty-nester couple wanted to enjoy their garden year-round, rain or shine. But their sunroom was too small and out of the flow--and the space went unused much of the time. An addition would have disturbed beautiful and valuable mature plantings. The solution required a sensitive design that stuck to the home's original footprint without sacrificing space.
