This majestic home sits on 29 acres overlooking the May River in coastal South Carolina. Meandering through a live oak forest, an intimate drive leads to the 10,000 s.f. main house. Six solid masonry columns of grand scale adorn the front stucco façade, foreshadowing the stately spaces and fine finishes found inside. Playing upon the site’s natural features in creating the estate, a charming, serpentine bridge crosses a small pond to an island that is home to two guest bunk houses. A five-bay Carriage House is reminiscent of a classical stable and is connected to the Main House by a porte-cochere. This breezeway is highlighted with elliptical arches, lattice and trellis, soon to cover with native vines, creating a garden element that adds natural texture to the estate.

The Verandah House was designed to epitomize the restrained elegance of the South’s grand, old homes. Inspired by the Greek Revival architecture prevalent in the four decades prior to the Civil War, this home merges classical elements with vernacular touches to create a relaxed refinement that works beautifully in this Lowcountry setting.
While situated on a relatively small site, the home fronts The Ford Plantation’s historic oak allée. In order to take advantage of this magnificent natural feature, the design team created a three-level home, whereby the height would create an instant sense of presence to echo the maturity of the trees beyond. The resulting stately façade was softened by shuttered verandahs, an indigenous architectural feature used to provide shelter from the warm climate. The opposite façade, which also fronts a street, was given a more ceremonial feel with classic Greek Revival symmetry and simplicity.

This plantation-style, slightly asian, ocean front home was designed with leisure and comfort in mind. This home is distinctly modern but gives the feeling of being in Hawaii in a different time - modern yet firmly rooted in the Hawaiian vernacular. The textures and colors borrow from the warmth of the landscape.
