How to Edit the Payment Method Settings

Once you’ve set up online payments, you can edit your preferred payment methods and decide whether to allow clients to pay by credit card, ACH/bank transfer, or both.

With this feature, you determine when you offer a certain payment method based on the transaction amount. For example, you might want to limit credit card payments to lower transaction amounts because of the higher fees compared to ACH payments.

You can define your payment method settings on either the company level or the project level.

Edit Payment Method Settings at Company Level

If you would like to treat the payment method settings the same for every project, you can set up a default within your company settings. Currently only admins can edit this at the company level.

Any changes made here will apply for all new projects moving forward — it will not automatically update already created projects unless you select that option. If you want to adjust the payment method settings for a specific project, you can do this within the project itself (more below).

To start:

1. Select the Settings icon in the left menu, then select Online Payments.

2. Under the Default Payment Settings section, click the Edit button on the right-hand side of your screen.

3. From this screen, you set the type of payments you would like to enable and disable for your clients.

Use the dropdown arrows to mark the acceptability for each payment method as Always, Based on Project Amount, Never — Future Projects, or Never — All Projects.

If you select Based on Project Amount, you will be able to enter a maximum monetary amount you would like to use for that payment method. To change this, enter the amount and select the check mark.

If a payment exceeds that set amount, the client will not be able to use that payment method.

Be sure to select Save Changes once complete.

Within the Online Payments section, you can also determine default settings for how to offset transaction fees. To learn more about this, read How to Offset the Transaction Fee to Your Client.

Edit Payment Method Settings at Project Level

If you want to customize the payment method preferences for a specific project instead, you can do this too. All team members can edit the payment method settings at the project level.

To start:

1. Find the Projects icon in the left menu, and select the relevant project from your menu.

2. Once on the project overview page, click the pencil icon in the top left of the page to edit project details.

3. From here, scroll down to the bottom of the page. In the Online Payment Methods section, you will see a section for ACH and a section for Credit Card.

Use the dropdown arrows to mark the acceptability for each payment method as Always, Never or For Range.

If you select For Range, you will be able to enter a maximum monetary amount you would like to use for that payment method. To change this, enter the amount and select the check mark.

If a payment exceeds that set amount, the client will not be able to use that payment method.

Your changes will automatically save. As a reminder, changes made here will only impact that one project.

Within the Online Payments section, you can also determine settings for how to offset transaction fees for this project. To learn more about this, read How to Offset the Transaction Fee to Your Client.
