How to Set Tax Rates

In your Houzz Pro Settings, you can create and save multiple sales tax rates to use as needed in your projects. Here's how to set that up.

To start:

  • Go into your Houzz Pro Settings. You can find your settings by selecting the Settings gear icon in your left-hand navigation.
  • On the left-hand side of your screen, click on Business Documents.
  • Under Business Document Setup at the top of the page, select Accounting.
  • Click Add Sales Tax to add a new tax.
  • Give the tax a name, enter the agency, and % rate. If you have two sales taxes to include — for example, state and local taxes — select Add Rates to divide them up.
  • Once you save the new sales tax, you’ll be able to start using it in your estimates or proposals.
Set Tax Rates for Estimates

Each line item on your estimate has a tax column. The default tax setting is Material. You can adjust the tax column as needed from the dropdown: None, Material, Labor, or Both.

To make changes, click the arrow in the tax column for the desired line item and a dropdown will appear. Choose the type of tax that applies to the item or select None.

Once you’ve set the tax correctly for your line items, scroll to the bottom of the estimate where you’ll be able to determine which tax rate should apply to this estimate.

Click the arrow next to Tax to choose one of the tax rates saved in your account settings. This rate will be applied to any line item marked in the tax column as Material, Labor, or Both.

If you’re already working on an estimate and you need a tax rate that doesn’t yet exist in your account, you can create that new tax rate from within the estimate — just select Create New Tax Rate from the dropdown. The tax rate will be saved in your account and can be used on future projects and estimates.

Set Tax Rates for Proposals

Each line item on your proposal has a tax column. The default tax setting is None. You can adjust the tax column as needed from the dropdown: Item or Shipping.

To make changes, click the arrow in the tax column for the desired line item and a dropdown will appear. Choose the type of tax that applies to the item. If neither Item nor Shipping are selected, it will default to None. If both are selected, it will default to All.

Once you’ve set the tax correctly for your line items, scroll to the bottom of the proposal where you’ll be able to determine which tax rate should apply to this proposal.

Click the arrow next to Tax to choose one of the tax rates saved in your account settings. This rate will be applied to any line item marked in the tax column as Item, Shipping or All.

If you’re already working on a proposal and you need a tax rate that doesn’t yet exist in your account, you can create that new tax rate from within the proposal — just select Create New Tax Rate from the dropdown. The tax rate will be saved in your account and can be used on future projects and proposals.
