The end of the year is the perfect time to check the status of your relationships with clients, fellow professionals, and vendors.

EVALUATE PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

• Consider your contacts. Anyone working on the job site could be a reflection on your and the quality you deliver to clients. Make a list of all subcontractors, suppliers, and service providers you work with.

• Assess performance. Write down any events from the past year, both positive and negative, that stand out to you for each relationship. Make sure to highlight any consistent problems that are impacting you negatively.

• Address the issues. Identify the relationships that need work and schedule some time to discuss. You’ll get to hear their side of the story, while also communicating your needs, so everyone can start the new year on the same page.

PROSPECT FOR NEW JOBS

• Identify past clients. Create a list of all of your past clients from the past year and consider who you want to work with again and/or which clients may have a further need for your services.

• Reach out. Email or call those homeowners to see how they’re enjoying the work you did for them and ask if they are planning any projects in the new year.

• Ask for referrals and reviews. Whether they are planning a project or not, mention that you are getting a head start on the new year and ask them to refer you to friends who might be planning a project and could use your professional services.

SEND SOME LOVE TO PAST CLIENTS

• Make a list. Sending something small to your favorite past or present clients can keep you top of mind for future projects. Create a list of clients you would like to work with again.

• Create tiers. You may want to consider dividing your list into separate groups depending on the project size or potential for future jobs. If that’s the case, choose gifts appropriately for each tier.

• Send a gift. Gifts don’t have to be extravagant - in fact, it doesn’t have to be a gift at all. Sending a holiday card is enough to keep you top of mind. Remember, it’s the thought that counts
