I am VERY disappointed in the poor and unprofessional quality of service given by Flying Dormer and would recommend AVOIDING this contractor. The contractor attempted a bait-and-switch on our contract and refused to honor terms agreed upon in planning meetings. After we caught the deception, we were told to find another contractor.
I worked with Maxim of Flying Dormer for two months on a plan to build a new 3/4 upstairs bathroom. During consultation visits, we agreed on items such as: a fully-fixed price contract and the responsibility for the contractor to obtain all necessary permits. When the contract came, we found that the plumbing work (a huge part of putting in a new bathroom) was just estimated and anything above the estimate was our responsibility. Essentially, this put all of the financial risk of the project on us and was not what was agreed upon in earlier discussions. When we asked to have this amended in the contract, we were told to go find another contractor.
Additionally, the contractor wanted an unreasonable amount of money up-front (~40%) and this was a huge red-flag for us. You don't ask for nearly half the money for a project before doing any work; that is not industry standard and is not fair to the customer. Again, when we asked to revise this we were told to find another contractor.
AVOID! Don't waste your time as I have.

Comment from Flying Dormer:
I’m sorry that you were not satisfied with the service you received. There was nothing in our contract that contradicts the information provided to you in our earlier bid, so I don’t know how you can claim otherwise.
I did my best to provide a written estimate and subsequent bid for your project (free of charge), which clearly outlined the scope of work, including the dollar allowance for the plumbing work. While I can understand it is scary to proceed with some unknowns, it is not reasonable to ask that I, or any contractor, cover unforeseen costs for problems that may lie beneath your walls, particularly in an older home like yours.
When establishing a payment schedule, we look at the length of the project to establish a reasonable number of payments, and look at the costs associated with the labor and material expenditures required at each stage of the project to establish the amount of each progress payment. The payment schedule we proposed for your project was in line with this.
For me, it is essential that my customers and I have a good working relationship. I respectfully withdrew our proposal once it became clear that we could not meet your expectations in respect to the payment schedule and covering unforeseen costs.
I wish you further success with your project.

We've worked with Maxim at Flying Dormer on two projects. The first was the removal of a load-bearing wall. Things went so well that when we were ready to proceed with our master bathroom remodel, we knew we wanted to work with Maxim.
Maxim and his team were very easy to work with and respectful of us and our home from start to finish on both projects. The quality of work is exceptional and the cost was reasonable.
For our master bathroom, we had the whole bathroom gutted- new everything because there wasn't really anything worth saving and we wanted to make a few changes to the layout. The shower area was enlarged and now feels much brighter. We provided the tile and fixtures for Flying Dormer to install, and the tile work is beautiful. We had them install heated flooring under the tiled floor which makes a huge difference walking into the room.
We highly recommend Maxim and Flying Dormer and will use them on any future projects.

We hired Flying Dormer to remodel our children's bathroom in March 2015. Maxim was able to start right away and worked very quickly. He was very flexible with our design ideas and patient as the scope of the project grew. The workmanship is very high quality, and the price was extremely reasonable and within the budget we discussed at the beginning of the project. He took great care of our home and kept our hardwood floors and stairs covered during the remodel. I never saw him break for meals, coffee, phone calls - he just works. He would always let us know when he would be arriving the next day and did a nice job of cleaning up the work area at the end of the day. Total project time was about 3 weeks including the downtime while we waited for the custom shower doors to be made. On the last day I had an opportunity to inspect the project and make a punch list of anything I wanted touched up, and he made sure all was right before we signed off. He said that if there was anything else we noticed after completion to call and he'd come out to make it right, which I'm sure he would. This is our fourth remodel project with Flying Dormer, and he continues to win our business with quality and integrity.

The experience we had hiring Maxim to remodel our home was excellent. He delivered excellent work, at competitive price, finished on schedule and is very easy to work with.
We purchased an older home that required quite some update. There are quite a few quirks with the home, and we wanted to it have it ready before we move in, so timing is a constraint. We started looking for contractors as soon as closed on the house. Out of all the contractors we contacted, Maxim is the only person showed up on time. It might have been a small detail, but I think his ability to be on-time and deliver made this experience an easy and enjoyable for us in a rather stressful time.
Scope of work, we needed very comprehensive remodeling for our home, which included:
Expand/completely remodel entire kitchen: removing a wall, re-framing, tiles, wood floors, cabinet and all appliance
Expand/completely remodel bathroom: removing existing walls, re-framing, water/plumbing tiles, flooring, shower/vanity/fixtures
Upgraded all windows
Repainted all the windows, trims, walls, ceilings
Electrical work with ceiling lights, additional outlets etc.
Others incl minor fixes deck trims, re-route down pour etc
We essentially touched, and changed every single part of our house. The way Maxim works is that his contract only covers labor/material (such as wood or windows). We would cover appliances/fixture. His price is actually much less than $100k project cost, then we spend money shopping the fixtures we like. Our cost is slightly over $100k
Other than the normal scope, we did run into a couple of issues during remodeling, had to fix/remove a leftover chimney and fix one ceiling. The cost was on hourly basis, and is not expensive at all. We even gained sqft and ceiling height as a result, which we loved.
In addition to the unexpected scope, we later added additional scope by adding a build-in closet (which increase the space without eating into any of the existing sqft, you can see his project pic), build a "new" fireplace, and add some additional storage spaces, all these scope changes are very reasonably priced.
Cost, overall if you exclude the unexpected item and the change of scope items we decided to add later, his cost was essentially unchanged from the original estimate (variance of 0%). We calculated our overall project variance (including the stuff we buy) our variance include unexpected items is less than 5%. Overall, include an unexpected item or change in scope, variance is

Maxim and his crew were extremely professional, punctual and respectful of our budget. There are few companies experienced in the installation of tilt-turn windows so we were happy to find Flying Dormers. Maxim is also a master at carpentry which was reflected in the level of detail to which he applied the finishing touches to trim. We would definitely recommend him for other projects.

Maxim was attentive to our every detail and very personable and courteous as well as staying on time and on budget. I really have nothing but great things to say about him and his subs and will be reaching out again for our next project.

The best contractor out there. Easy to communicate with, understands what needs to be done RIGHT AWAY. Maxim looks at a project and knows what to do. As in: Maxim can handle any project. He's also clean, organized, and quick. If you've used other contractors, you may have discovered that not all contractors, (not many, in fact) are prepared, have all the tools and materials they need, and clean up after themselves. Maxim does. We've used him for three of our homes/offices so far.

Maxim was extremely pleasant and professional from beginning to end--the window installation and carpentry look beautiful and we would definitely call Flying Dormer if we needed more work done.

I recently purchased a home and wanted to create a master suite by taking down an interior wall, blocking off a redundant door, adding new flooring, and creating a new closet. I went with Flying Dormer after reading positive reviews online, and I was not disappointed!
Maxim helped me work out the details of the new room, showed me different options based on price, and worked to complete the project on my schedule. He was incredibly professional and was always available when I had questions. And the room turned out better than I could have hoped! I'll definitely be using Flying Dormer again in the future.

I worked with Maxim and his crew for years. I there when he turned a three unit apartment building into a 8000sq foot single family dwelling. The structure was almost completely gutted and the stairwell was relocated, additionally all the stucco was removed/rotted wood repaired/and then new stucco applied! Flying dormer is amazing when it comes to remodels and additions. The most recent project we worked on was a basement remodel, I'm always impressed by the way Maxim and his crew are so detail oriented.

Maxim has completed two projects for us. One was the leveling of a sunken living room floor and installation of laminate flooring. The other was the addition of a covered deck. Both projects presented several unique challenges, but the results are very nice. He is starting the next of what we anticipate are several more remodel projects to update our almost 50 year old home.
Maxim takes personal responsibility for all details of the work and performs to very high standards.

My husband and I hired Maxim to do some work in a house that we just bought. We needed 3 toilets replaced, one of which was leaking into the floor, and so we also had him repair the bathroom floor and retile as well. He did an amazing job! It turned out that two of the toilets wouldn't fit under the bathroom counter ledge thing - but Maxim was able to change the counter in a way so they would fit. He didn't let any challenge stop him.
We also had Maxim help us remove an old wall mounted microwave/range fan unit that was really stuck on the wall and install a new hood range. He took the time to retro-fit the stock duct cover to fit into our wall space perfectly. We could not be more pleased with his work! He was quick to respond to our inquiries on Houzz, and was always on time and professional. We wouldn't hesitate to hire him again, and I'm sure we will!
