I moved from New York City to Ottawa in 2002 to accept a tenured position in the School of Architecture at Carleton University and simultaneously opened my design practice, Kariouk Associates. The work of my office appears frequently in national and international publications as well as television reviews; my office currently has projects underway in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New York City, and the Caribbean. My design work has also been featured in numerous museums and galleries including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New York City’s Storefront for Art and Architecture, and the Smithsonian’s National Design Cooper-Hewitt Museum. While the cost of construction in North America is significant, I believe it is a misconception that only wealthy clients with large budgets employ designers; the financial issues much more concern value than budget. As such, the mainstay of my design work is provided to design-intelligent, quality-minded clients with modest means who are seeking to take a limited budget and to create added value and quality of life for that budget.
