Consigned English Regency Rosewood Writing Table circa 1820
Consigned English Regency Rosewood Writing Table circa 1820by SillaLtd
REGENCY CARVED ROSEWOOD WRITING TABLE England, circa 1820 Item # 901ZXG23Q A handsome Anglo-Indian regency writing table, it is executed with solid Brazilian Rosewood planks, a wood now nearly extinct and rare in this vibrant and chaotic grain. The dense grain takes a French polish beautifully with a rich shellac surface that highlights the richness of the wood. A pair of drawers on one side are matched with faux-drawers on the opposing side, each with triangular chip-carved decorations flanking the brass knobs (one side knobs are replaced). Both are crisply hand dovetailed with what appears to be mahogany secondary woods. A triple-bead and dart embellishment highlights the edge of the apron. The turned pedestals that raise the desk sit over sabre legs terminating in cast brass animal paw castors. Notable is the unique joinery on the untouched underside, the corners receiving dovetails from the side planks, all a dark nut-brown to nearly black from oxidization. It is an inordinately fine and striking writing table. Measurements: 29 3/4" H x 61 3/8" W x 30 1/2" D (at feet); 26 3/8" D (at top) Condition Report: Old refinish; replaced pulls on one side (note the slight variation). Modern lock, no key. Seam visibility at a board joint on the top, some color variation to the top, likely from sun exposure. Shrink cracks around apron. Piece of replaced molding beside left drawer, other veneer patches; spliced repair in bottom of one pedestal; a few "beads" missing around edges; some re-coloring and color variation in apron; one castor wheel is a bit damaged and slips when moved.Read More
