Cheese Knives

Camembert and gruyere are both members of the cheese family. However, to properly cut each one, you need specific cheese knives. It can be tempting to purchase a luxury laguiole cheese knife set, but know what types of cutlery you’re actually getting before making your investment. Hard and soft varieties will behave differently when being sliced and served, but with a good cheese board and knife set, you will always be prepared to cut, slice, spread and enjoy your cheesy snack.

What type of cheese knife do I need?

Cheese Slicer: Also referred to as a cheese plane, these are designed to slice semi-hard and hard cheeses into thin and even pieces.

Cheese Cutter: These are ideal for cutting larger pieces of soft and sticky cheeses. Also called a cheese wire, these feature a thin but strong wire stretched across a frame that makes a clean cut without sticking to an utensil.

Knife for Soft Types: Oddly enough, soft cheeses need a sharp blade. Serrated knives with holes in the blade will help prevent sticking and achieve a more presentable cut. Some people find cheese spreaders sufficient, especially if you plan on cutting and spreading your snack in one action.

Knife for Hard Types: You need a strong knife to cut through harder cheeses. They don’t have to be ultra sharp, but it helps if they are small and sturdy, like a thick parmesan knife.
