New Orleans "Wet Upper Square" Stretched Canvas Giclee, 30"x40"by Mark Pritchard Artworks
$346

Two-thirds of the French Quarter structures date from the first half of the 19th century, the most prolific decade being the 1820s, when the city was growing at an amazing rate. Records show that not a single Spanish architect was operating in the city by that time; only French and American were, the latter gradually replacing the former as Creole style was being replaced by Greek revival architecture in the 1830s and 1840s.Spanish administrators, in the late 18th century, did enforce strict building codes, requiring brick construction to avoid another fire; but the Spaniards did not directly influence much of the Quarter's architecture. Spanish influence came indirectly with the form of Creole style, which mixed French and Spanish architecture, with some elements from the Caribbean. From its south end to the intersection with Claiborne Avenue, Canal Street is extremely dense with buildings. Each building, being no larger than half a New Orleans block, has a notably intricate facade. All of these buildings contrast each other in style, from Greek revival, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco, to Renaissance Colonial, and one of Gothic architecture. Also there is Post-modern, Mid-century modern, Streamline Moderne, and other types of 20th-century architecture. However, most of these buildings have lost their original interiors because of hurricane damage and business renovations. Jackson Square took its current form in the 1850s: the Cathedral was redesigned, mansard rooftops were added to the Cabildo and to the Presbytere, and the Pontalba apartments were built on the sides of the square, adorned with iron work balconies. The popularity of wrought iron or cast iron balconies in New Orleans began during this period.

The famous "Clover Grill" is iconic in the Big Easy and can even be seen in the movie "This Property is Condemned" starring Natalie Wood some 40 plus years ago. Everyone's favorite quirky Bourbon street diner, Clover Grill is famous for more than their self proclaimed "World's Best Hamburger" and as a mom and pop world renowned restaurant but also where Benjamin Button glimpses Elizabeth Abbott's victorious swim across the English Channel at age 68 as he dines with Daisy. The original building at 900 Bourbon St was a Creole Cottage built in 1825 and Clover Grill has been serving up round-the-clock meals since 1939. Their quirky menu reads things like "If you're not served in 5 minutes, it may be another 5. Relax. This isn't New York City." "Dancing in the aisles only. Please keep off the tables." "We're here to serve people and make people feel they are prettier than they really are." And, true to its Bourbon Street location, the menu includes the adjuration "No strange tricks at tables, please. Please keep hands on top of the table. No talking to yourself." The history of Clover Grill is as welcoming as everything else you love about this city. The smell of hot gumbo and crawfish cooking in the windows, music fills the streets and the Southern charm exudes into the air like time stopped there with those mouth-watering hubcap covered cooking mounds of what a burger used to be.

New Orleans "Street Car Interior" Stretched Canvas Giclee, 30"x40"by Mark Pritchard Artworks
$346

I'm not going to get into the history of the Streetcar in New Orleans, suffice it to say it is extensive. Whit I will say is most photographers totally miss the real beauty of the streetcar, the interior. This streetcar was manufactured in 1921 and has been in service ever since. I caught this shot on a day the electricity kept going out due to nearby construction or you would normally never find one without a group of passengers inside. They are now the backbone of the city transportation network for thousands that depend on them for their daily commutes.

New Orleans "Circus Train" Stretched Canvas Giclee, 30"x40"by Mark Pritchard Artworks
$346

Nothing screams American history like the Circus Train. The first ones came on the scene in the 1870s and it quickly became the difference between going to a show and having a real circus come to your town. Unfortunately the last circus train just recently pulled off the tracks for the final time, leaving a real hole in our American fabric. At one time a circus train would carry as many as 1600 people, performers and crew alike, with hundreds of animals and oddities as it made its way from town to town. Nothing matched the excitement of seeing the wildly multi colored train roll into your town, especially before the time of TV and even telephones or electricity in many cases. The Circus tradition is ingrained in the collective memories of generations of Americans.
- The photographer captures the essence of youthful memories of the vivid and whimsical Circus train in this image.

New Orleans "Firecracker Stand" Stretched Canvas Giclee, 24"x32"by Mark Pritchard Artworks

Childhood memories would not be the same without fireworks. Any kid that grew up in the 60s or 70s knows that nothing matched the intoxicating smell or the anticipation of what the brown bag of excitement held. It all started with Mom or Dad going on an actual trip to the local fireworks tent, the kind that started popping up all over town, usually weeks before the 4th of July. Once there, it was a mad dash to the bottle rockets and the black cat firecrackers, with any money left over spent on smoke bombs and black snakes that left Dad's sidewalk with a horrible black soot stain for most of the summer. Sparklers were reserved for only the smallest of children. The exotic packaging was a form of art all by itself and is now a highly sought after collectable. My hope is this print will take you back to that time.

New Orleans "Lone Musician" Stretched Canvas Giclee, 18"x24"by Mark Pritchard Artworks

Look up the word Music in the dictionary and you should see a picture of New Orleans. It is safe to say that no other city in the United States has been more important to the development of American music as New Orleans. We all know that New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz, but it goes much deeper and broader than that. The first music in New Orleans started in the mid-1700s with the all night jam sessions held by slaves in Congo Square adjacent to the French Quarter. In Louisiana's French and Colonial era of the 18th century people were commonly given Sunday off and routinely gathered in Congo Square where they established a market and would sing and dance for 24 hours straight. The instruments were drums, gourds, banjo like instruments, marimbas, mixed with European instruments such as the violin, tambourine and triangles. This tradition continued after the city became part of the Louisiana Purchase. The weekly gatherings became a famous site for visitors from around the world and was written about in newspapers of the era. It from these humble and crucial beginnings that the Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Brass Band and even Rock and Roll found its roots and became famous around the world. All this because some remarkable men and women gathered in the square to share the gift of music. This lone musician is taking a break from his passion of sharing the joy of music with the city.

One of the most important ports in the history of the United States graces New Orleans. Several factors bolster the prominence of the New Orleans Port, the most obvious reason is its location at the mouth of the great Mississippi River. What we do not often hear about or realize is the whole Louisiana Purchase was predicated on the fact that the settlers in the Ohio Valley in the late 1700s claimed they could not survive without the trade from the Mississippi River. President Jefferson suggested purchasing New Orleans from Spain, which had secretly given Louisiana back to France. In 1803 the United States bought the entire territory from France (half of the US at the time) for $15 million dollars doubling the size of the United States, all due to the need for the Port of New Orleans. The port remains active to this day. This unique image captures just one of the sights that can be found in the Port.
