Skipjack Painted (L80) Wooden model sailing boatby Old Modern Handicrafts, Inc.(10)
$349
The history of Skipjack
The Skipjack apparently first appeared on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland in the late 1800s. Its development was precipitated by the decline in oyster harvests, and the need for an inexpensive shallow draft vessel.
The design hasnt changed in over 150 years, and the average Skipjack has now lasted well over three-quarters of a century, a tribute to their excellent construction. Skipjacks carry a sail design known as the "Leg-O-Mutton" Sloop Rig consisting of a main sail and a jib. The standard design formula calls for a mast height which is the same the as length of the vessel on deck, plus the width of the beam.
According to legend, no Skipjack was ever built from a formal set of plans, but rather by "rack of the eye". They were developed from the lines of the Chesapeake Bay Log Canoe, the Brogan, and the famous Clipper Ships. They are unique to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia, and the few remaining skipjacks still dredge oysters under sail during the fall and winter oyster season on the Chesapeake Bay
About the Skipjack model ship
This is a special FULLY ASSEMBLED replica of the Skipjack, a traditional fishing boat used on Chesapeake Bay for oyster dredging. It is a sailboat which succeeded the Bugeye as the chief oyster boat on the bay, and remains in service due to laws restricting the use of powerboats in the Maryland state oyster fishery. Master craftsmen using historical photographs, drawings or original plans meticulously handcraft these highly detailed wood models from scratch. They are built to scale with high-grade wood such as: western red cedar, rosewood, and mahogany. This model comes standard with a solid wood base and brass nameplate. It'll make a perfect gift for home or office decorator, boat enthusiast or passionate collector.

USS Alabama BB-60by Old Modern Handicrafts, Inc.Sponsored
$1,001
The history of USS Alabama BB-60
From its humble beginnings on February 1, 1940, as the keel was laid at the Norfolk Navy Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia, Battleship USS ALABAMA (BB-60) has had a remarkable career. She began her World War II adventures in the North Atlantic in 1943, then later that year, went to the South Pacific seas. She ended up in Mobile, Alabama as a National Historic Landmark and memorial to millions.
Home to a crew of 2,500 courageous Americans, this 45,000-ton war machine's WWII adventure culminated with BB-60 leading the American Fleet into Tokyo Bay on September 5, 1945. Nine Battle Stars for meritorious service were awarded the “Mighty A" during her brief three-year tenure as the “Heroine of the Pacific".
Alabama assisted in Operation Magic Carpet after the war, carrying some 700 men home from the former war zone. She was decommissioned in 1947 and assigned to the Pacific Reserve Fleet, where she remained until 1962 when she was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register. A campaign to save the ship from the breakers' yard succeeded in raising the necessary funds, and Alabama was preserved as a museum ship in Mobile Bay, Alabama.
