Bundu, sometimes known as Sande, is the name of the powerful female society of the Mende people, one of the two largest ethnic groups in modern day Sierra Leone. Representing a nature spirit among the Bwa tribe of Burkina Faso, this elegant mask takes the shape of a butterfly. However, art historian Christopher D. Roy reports that elders of the Kambi clan in Dossi refer to these long-nosed butterfly masks as hawks or vultures. "This mask is used by males of the Bwa tribe during the harvesting of grains," says master wood carver Salihu Ibrahim. The red color comes from stones, ground and mixed with glue. Clay gives it yellow shading, and the black accents are created with charcoal. A loop on the back of the mask allows it to be easily displayed on a wall.

Sefah Mohammed finds inspiration in the art and customs of Ghana's Ada people. He crafts an ornate sese wood mask featuring painted details and embossed aluminum plates. Known as Fiami ("Call me"), the mask is worn by virgin girls when dancing at the Asafotufiame Festival in July. It is regarded as high honor for a family to have a daughter in the dance. Past Ada warriors and their feats are remembered during this festival, which also serves as preparation for the upcoming harvest season. The festival finishes with a colorful and energetic durbar organized by Ada chiefs.

A brilliant star lances mystic rays across the forehead of this beaded mask by Higinio Hernandez. It casts white light on the tatei yukahima, or �corn plant,� its golden ears ready to harvest. Teruka the scorpion stands guard over the corn on either side of the mouth, and jicuri, or �peyote� buttons, adorn cheeks and chin. Jicuri is the centerpiece of Huichol ritualism, revered for its curative properties and its ability to enlighten those who partake of it.
Aided by his wife and guided by their imagination and feelings, Hernandez creates these vivid images with brilliant chaquira beads patiently placed one at a time on a papier mache base. Beeswax is used instead of glue. His masks reveal the rich cosmology of the Huichol people and add color and life to any setting.
Because each mask is individually crafted without a pattern, small details may vary, such as the color of a flower or symbol, but without affecting the original design.
Care instructions: Since this exquisite mask is made with the traditional process of attaching the beads with wax, do not expose this piece to direct heat or light, which may cause the wax to dry or soften and thus loosen the beads.

Working in the style of the people of Congo and Gabon, Awudu Saaed carves a beautiful African mask. On the forehead, an inverted spade points to the nose and mouth, while hand-embossed aluminum and brass add textural interest. "I so admire these masks that I used this concept and came up with my own design of the face and the colors used," the Ghanaian artisan confides.
