Suina Design + Architecture is a 100% Native American Women Owned design firm located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We believe that for a building project to be successful, the design must be developed organically from the people, place and history for which it will reside. It is our goal to facilitate a collaborative process with the community, project Owners and building users to create a culturally appropriate design solution.

As Native American design professionals, we have a unique awareness and appreciation for Indian community needs. While our cultures are diverse we share many common visions, values and ideals. Our project team understands the reciprocal relationship between cultural ideas and the form and organization of the built environment. Ideas and values help shape the built environment, and in turn the built environment produces and reinforces those values and ideas. We understand the traditional Indian community relationship to the land and the built environment, and we want to continue this legacy. We are firm believers in community participation to garner a sense of ownership and do so through Visioning and On-Site Planning Sessions as part of our design philosophy. We offer our leadership to orchestrate and guide the Design Team’s path throughout the project process by facilitating respectful communication and decision-making among all project participants.
A Registered Architect in the state of New Mexico, Robert Maze owns and runs Desert Sky Designs. Originally from Taos, he attended University of California, Berkeley School of Environmental Design for a BA Architecture in 1989, and received his Master of Architecture from the University of New Mexico in 1998. Mr. Maze's professional background includes 3 years with a Northern New Mexico solar design-build firm and 7 years with a local Architect / Interior Design company. Desert Sky Designs is in its 10th year of operation. While working with Native American tribes in Arizona and New Mexico, Bob gained valuable experience in green building codes and techniques and is now able to offer a wide range of services in both the commercial and residential areas of design. Desert Sky Designs has developed long standing design-build relationships with some of Albuquerque's best small scale residential contractors. The design-build approach involves the builder early on in the design discourse. This often helps foster good communication between the parties and gives the client a clear idea of what to expect out of the process.
We’ve been engaged in the practice of architecture for more than 30 years, and have developed and continue to develop close associations with the best engineers, consultants, builders, craftsmen and artists. The scope of our architectural projects ranges from individual furnishings and fixtures to a manufacturing campus. Our work in the areas of corporate project management and construction management is extensive. Most of our residential architecture is built using natural materials — adobe, straw, and stone. Many of our adobe homes are heated through passive solar design, with built-in summer shading and ventilation. As you view the projects, you will see many styles — historic and traditional Pueblo and Territorial designs, contemporary and interpretive, and even the first Warehouse District styled commercial project. It’s an exciting time for design professionals, builders, and developers, as we are encouraged/forced to think globally for the good of all by building locally – using materials and talents close to the project. The concepts of sustainability, healthy environments, and conservation, are constantly redefined through investigation, discovery, and invention.
