Erick Mikiten is known as a highly sought after architect for elegant, Universally Designed homes. He is famous for his expertise in designing highly personalized homes around a whole family’s needs without sacrificing poetic, dramatic design. We examine a site or existing building intensively to understand it before we start drawing. This helps us design buildings that are rooted in their place and 'feel right', even if they do not follow the dictums of a particular historical design. We are inspired by clarity, intricacy, and light. We love the brilliant gestures of Rodin and Calder, the sophisticated detail of Japanese joinery, the writings of Louis Kahn, the buildings of Alvar Aalto, Louis Kahn, and Luis Barragan, and the movement of the sun and breezes around every site we work on. We believe that architecture should inspire, and lift people beyond the every day, connecting with the grace of nature. Every project we do incorporates green design, reflecting our respect for nature. We are able to usher projects through LEED or other rating systems if desired by the client. Our Shinsei Gardens project achieved a LEED-Platinum rating for multifamily housing. As a wheelchair rider, Erick Mikiten has particular insights into Universal Design, the creation of spaces, indoors and outdoors, that are fully usable by everyone - regardless of their level of physical ability, and seamlessly integrated into beautiful architecture. Due to the level of inspection around so many clients' particular disabilities, we naturally look deeper into EVERY client's needs and desires. The process we have developed, and the insights we have gained while working on accessible architecture come around to inform every project, making places that are gracious, nurturing, and welcoming to all.

Architect Lorin Hill and associates emphasize pragmatic and creative design solutions to variety of design opportunities throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Every project presents its own unique challenges, and we find something compelling in every project, no matter what size. Excellent design only reaches its full potential if it can be effectively translated into a completed construction project that meets scheduling and budget goals. We promote a pro-active approach aimed at achieving and maintaining good "chemistry" among all players in the process: the client, the design team, and the contractor. Our particular strengths include responsiveness, thoroughness, communication and flexibility. We provide a continuum of services that take a project from the broad overview (a master plan) to the specifics of construction detailing and specifications, with active involvement in the construction process. We are committed to environmentally sustainable practices in our work and often incorporate the Build-it-Green GreenPoints Rating System into our projects. First and foremost, the renovation of existing structures minimizes the waste of resources. We promote the use of locally-sourced, renewable and recycled building materials as well as building systems and site design that favor water and energy conservation. Improved indoor air quality and the reduction of contaminants contribute to healthier living environments. Our primary focus is residential projects, with an emphasis on high-quality design and creative, pragmatic solutions. Much of our work involves the comprehensive renovation and expansion of existing homes. We draw upon the inherent strengths of a building to produce improved living spaces, healthier environments, and added real estate value. Other project types include commercial tenant improvements and mixed-use developments.

My foray into architecture started in high school when I decided to expand my family's Santa Barbara home into its large unfinished attic. My parents and neighbors were a little alarmed when they came home from work and saw that I had cut a large hole in the side of the house for a new door and stairway. For the next four summers I worked for contractors and electricians so that I could learn the skills needed to finish the attic into livable space. At UC Berkeley, I studied architecture and civil engineering. After college, I worked in construction and was licensed as a general contractor. For the past 20 years, I have been working as an architect on new vacation homes throughout Northern California and remodels/renovations in the San Francisco Bay Area. My goal as an architect is to help you make the architecture and construction process a conscious effort and to create a beautiful and functional environment, unique to your personality and reflective of your specific needs. Life is but a dream. With a slant towards Hindu philosophy, my mother would argue that life is pre-determined and that ultimately we have no control over our lives. I would argue that we have the choice to create beautiful environments, and I meticulously work through the details to ensure that your dream becomes a reality. My design etiquette is restrained and comfortable, not gaudy. I love light and large windows, natural materials, and expression of the structure. I gravitate to work that is made by craftsmen rather than machine, to elements and details from the 1920s and before. Thank you for your consideration in having me help with your project. Rob Kelly

Mattingly Thaler Architecture is an architectural, planning and interior design firm with a broad range of projects and experience. Our firm was founded in 1988, and we pursue two key goals: excellence in design and the provision of the highest level of professional service to each client. Our experience includes high quality custom homes throughout Northern California, high schools and middle schools, dormitories, cafeterias and libraries, residential and commercial interiors, retail and office space, galleries, restaurants, office space planning, theaters, and children's playhouses, along with custom cabinetry and a broad range of custom furniture. Our design process is collaborative: we emphasize a close working relationship with our client, the project team and the local community as the project progresses through each phase of the design process. Instead of architecture being valued for its ability to adhere to a single style or for its use of the latest trends, we believe that the richness of each building and the beauty of any space will be found individually, according to the recognition, acknowledgment and response to the desires, needs and aesthetic concerns which are integral to each design and every act of building. Each project is seen as a partnership between the client, the architect and the specific context. While we intend our architecture to work in the world of art, we do not impose pre-conceived solutions or pursue eccentric innovation for its own sake. The design process shapes and is shaped by the client's ideal program, the specific needs for both now and planned for the future, the geographic location of the project and economic constraints placed on the construction. We are dedicated to the resolution of the inherent contradictions in life and to finding a true balance between desires and reality.
