Based in Nantucket with an office in Boston, Emeritus is a professional residential design firm addressing the individual needs of home builders and owners through comprehensive architectural design services. Based in Nantucket, Massachusetts, Emeritus is a professional residential and commercial design firm addressing the individual needs of owners through comprehensive design services. Philosophy Drawing on many modes of architectural design ranging from the Renaissance to Early Shaker to the Post Modernists of the 20th Century, Emeritus implements progressive design concepts that balance symmetrical interior planning with traditional New England details. Analyzing cultures throughout Western and Eastern Europe, South America and Asia, we’ve had the opportunity to identify the common denominators of quality living. A space must provide shelter from the elements and function properly, but equally important it must reflect the lifestyle of its occupants in a manner sympathetic to daily habitation and occupation. We believe a space, if properly planned and executed, can increase the quality of living. At Emeritus, we realize the critical role of professional builders and the understanding of construction techniques. We distinguish ourselves as a design company that recognizes the importance of builder support to efficiently produce a high-quality project.

Since Bruce MacNelly and Linda Cohen started their practice on Martha's Vineyard in 1983, their primary focus has been on residential work in and around their island base, including projects in Rhode Island and Connecticut. In addition to his role as principal in MacNelly Cohen Architects, Bruce MacNelly has had an extensive academic career, teaching architectural design at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University; the Rhode Island School of Design; Wentworth Institute of Technology; the University of Pennsylvania; and Princeton, Temple, and Louisiana Tech Universities. We believe that the practice of architecture is primarily the art of making places, not of making objects; and that intelligently made these places can inspire us to live within them with joy and a sense of well-being. Among our tools in this work are inspiration and analysis, poetry and technology, space and material. Like any other art, architecture is about spirit as much as substance, and a work of architecture can be understood both as a freestanding object and as part of a larger order of things, dependent for its life on its culture, its site, its program, and above all its inhabitants. The rich historical fabric of the island of Martha's Vineyard, where we work and live, provides us with many contexts within which to build, from Greek Revival to Shingle Style to simple farmhouse. It is our intent to refer lovingly to these precedents, while allowing a sense of modernity to pervade our work as well. We believe that the resulting dialogue between the present and the past contributes to the richness and resonance of the places we make. The diverse nature of the work represented by the photographs and drawings here is therefore a reflection of the differences found from project to project in site, in program, and especially in the concerns and desires of each client. At the same time, we hope that the images will also reveal a common set of qualities which we seek to bring to our buildings - volumetric clarity, a celebration of light, a connection to the landscape, and an expression of character through building.

Architects Matthew Moger and Kirby Mehrhof, who have practiced independently for more than two decades, cofounded Moger Mehrhof Architects (MMA) in 2009 on the philosophical basis that architecture requires a creative exploration of the relationship between dwellings and the landscape they inhabit. Believing that buildings are bridges that form and retain connections to nature, to culture and among people, they consistently recognize the positive impact that structures can have on people's lives. Their approach starts with knowing that good design is born from a true understanding of the client's needs. It includes their passion and experience with sustainable design. And always, their goal is the elegant connection among materials, surfaces, and light. Their commitment to sustainable design is rooted in the site itself. They decide how to modulate the natural light that affects how we perceive a space. Whether positioning the building, deciding on how to optimize the potential for passive heating and cooling, or making the countless decisions about structure and function, they remain aware of the value of detail and execution.

Mashek MacLean Architects, Inc. is a studio-sized architectural design practice on the Island of Martha's Vineyard. MMArchitects has provided architectural design and planning services to educational institutions, towns, museums, country clubs, non-profit organizations and private residential clients throughout New England since incorporation in 1975. MMA relocated its offices from Long Wharf in Boston to the Island of Martha’s Vineyard in 2007. The principals at MMA – Stephanie Mashek and Kenneth MacLean, Jr. – take a personal role in the development and completion of each phase of every project, actively running the firm’s projects from concept through construction. Offering a personal, hands-on approach to the collaborative process of design, clients know MMA to be flexible, patient and extremely good listeners. Covering a diverse range of building types and settings, the portfolio is tied together not by the imposition of a signature “MMA Style,” but a commitment to contextual design, seeking solutions that grow out of existing built and natural settings. Buildings are designed to fit into existing site and architectural context, taking cues from existing styles and patterns to create a fresh and appropriate architectural language. That language is composed using strong organizational principles, executed with sustainability-conscious and budget-conscious technical skill. This approach requires on-site investigation and observation of buildings, landscape, documents, and history. MMA is best known for the design of buildings that fit overall context – not solo, attention-seeking structures that stand aloof from their surroundings.

Gifford Coastal Architecture was founded on the belief that people's homes should feel like they belong in the environment in which they exist. Perhaps nowhere is this philosophy more important than at the edge of the sea. We specialize in coastal design, addressing and solving the challenges of exposure to the seaside environment while adhering to FEMA rules, state building codes, and local zoning ordinances. With thoughtful consideration to the unique physical characteristics of each site—such as topography, views, prevailing winds, and sun direction—we craft exciting and unique interior spaces with striking exterior architectural form and detail that enhance their surroundings. Gifford Coastal Architecture is committed to addressing the personal needs of our clients through the creation of customized spaces for today’s lifestyles. While most of our work focuses on residential projects on the Southcoast of Massachusetts, the power of the Internet has enabled us to design distinctive homes for distant clients from Wyoming to Florida.
