My foray into architecture started in high school when I decided to expand my family's Santa Barbara home into its large unfinished attic. My parents and neighbors were a little alarmed when they came home from work and saw that I had cut a large hole in the side of the house for a new door and stairway. For the next four summers I worked for contractors and electricians so that I could learn the skills needed to finish the attic into livable space. At UC Berkeley, I studied architecture and civil engineering. After college, I worked in construction and was licensed as a general contractor. For the past 20 years, I have been working as an architect on new vacation homes throughout Northern California and remodels/renovations in the San Francisco Bay Area. My goal as an architect is to help you make the architecture and construction process a conscious effort and to create a beautiful and functional environment, unique to your personality and reflective of your specific needs. Life is but a dream. With a slant towards Hindu philosophy, my mother would argue that life is pre-determined and that ultimately we have no control over our lives. I would argue that we have the choice to create beautiful environments, and I meticulously work through the details to ensure that your dream becomes a reality. My design etiquette is restrained and comfortable, not gaudy. I love light and large windows, natural materials, and expression of the structure. I gravitate to work that is made by craftsmen rather than machine, to elements and details from the 1920s and before. Thank you for your consideration in having me help with your project. Rob Kelly
I am in the business of creating authentic architecture that fits naturally in the surroundings and harmoniously with the site. Over the years my focus has evolved to include greater promotion of environmental sustainability through design and innovation, with a strong emphasis on balancing the aesthetics and functionality. Where I differ from other architects and designers is in my effort to create buildings that not only solve my clients’ needs, but also enhance their lives by utilizing creative solutions that allow for uniquely attractive spaces. I find that, most of the time, a little extra effort is all that is necessary to generate a building design that will merge form and function into an amazing result. A sustainable “green” building that is unattractive is not an option for me. I need, and seek, extraordinary clients that are looking for, and require, extraordinary projects.

Design and service driven practice focused on modern design with creative detailing on a wide range of budgets. Ryan Knock, AIA, architect and principal of Knock A+D, is a Licensed architect in the State of California, a LEED accredited Professional and a Certified Green Building Professional. He earned a Bachelors Degree in 2001 from the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Design, where he received several honors and awards. Knock Architecture and Design's Vision is to make modern, sustainable spaces that are rooted in place. Every project begins with a thorough documentation of the site and surrounding character, followed by in depth investigation into how the users and inhabitants plan to use the space and what their day to day patterns and inspiration and dreams are. This leads to highly tailored solutions to the local environment and community, and also inhabitants and end users. High attention to construction quality, detail, and finishing touches, with hands on service throughout the entire project, result in textured and rich spaces which speak to the way the materials are assembled, and represent the character of both the building within a neighborhood, and those who dwell in them.

Dale was a youngster when he started using LEGO® bricks and graph paper to build and design floor plans and elevations. He dreamed of one day being a real-life, grown-up architect. He’s never stopped living the dream. To this day, his passion for spaces to live in fuels his passion for architecture. Now, on any given day, Dale might be designing a 6,000-square-foot suburban home while remodeling a 50-square-foot bathroom in an historic home in San Francisco. His innate versatility and wealth of experience allow him to quickly grasp and efficiently meet multiple jurisdictional requirements. Taking the collaborative approach enables him to elicit the information from clients needed to provide them with original, aesthetic solutions. Using his always-active imagination and ever-practical ideas lead him to envisioning living spaces that are not only functional, but also works of art. Do you love to cook? So does Dale. He understands that both beauty and engineering are needed in the kitchen. Or any room. Or any home. Equally comfortable in historical, traditional, and modern styles, the homes Dale designs are unique to the lifestyle and taste of the client, incorporate site characteristics, and will maximize views and privacy. He also has applied his spatial and environmental approaches to retail and office venues, making them livable – not just workable. The dreamer became the dream catcher. Dale Anderson earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture from the University of Washington. He is licensed as Architect by the states of California and Washington. He and his family call San Francisco “home.”

Karin Payson architecture and design (KPa+d) was established in 1992 to pursue a diverse practice of both private and publicly funded work. We work closely with clients to expand, remodel and build new facilities. We believe that all superior design stems from disciplined architectural inquiry. The situation, site, and unique wants and needs of each individual client drive the solution rather than stylistic preferences. Whether a project is urban or rural, whether it involves a complete building or simply an interior, we seek to integrate a love of landscape and natural light with straightforward principles of spatial organization to make a design that is as elegant as it is sensible. Ultimately we hope that our clients see themselves and their dreams reflected in the work. The work we do as architects has inevitable consequences for local and global environments as well as personal comfort. KPa+d has a long history of engaging the spaces we design with the site, capturing every possible opportunity to bring the outdoors inside with natural light, views, and outdoor rooms. We guide clients toward smart choices about materials and mechanical systems that will meet their needs and enhance the physical and aesthetic experience of place.
