Featured Reviews for Emeryville, CA Architects and Building Designers

Mikiten Architecture
Emeryville, CA Architects and Building Designers
August 30, 2014
We hired Erick Mikiten as the project architect for a major kitchen remodel and some ancillary work on the entrance porches to the house in 1994/95. We wanted to expand the kitchen, remodel the interior to include new cabinets and an island, provide a new seating area in an addition at the rear of the house, and improve what was then an awkward connection between the kitchen and a rear bedroom. Erick came up with a very creative solution to the space constraints in the existing kitchen that resulted in a much more spacious kitchen with a larger island than we had anticipated. The addition on the rear of the house not only provided a seating area with views into the rear garden that we use on a daily basis, but included a very attractive raised ceiling and exterior architecture that continue to receive admiring comments from friends and visitors almost 20 years later. Erick's firm also recommended a new color scheme for the exterior of the house, which we adopted. Even now, from time to time complete strangers stop by to ask about the specifications of the paint colors because they find it so attractive and are considering doing something similar. Throughout the project Erick made great efforts to understand what we were looking for and present alternative options to achieve this, going through multiple iterations of the design as we refined the concept together, then producing a final design that satisfied our budget constraints. During construction, Erick visited the site on a regular basis and worked closely with the contractor to make sure that the work was being done in conformance with the design.
Lorin Hill, Architect
Emeryville, CA Architects and Building Designers
August 12, 2014
We were terrified to finally remodel. Now we're halfway through the job, and I'm wondering how it could possibly be going so well? The answer: Lorin Hill, Architect, and his team. Ours is not a small job - we've excavated a basement; moved the kitchen, downstairs powder room, laundry room (which went from 1st to 2nd floor); and moved a lot of walls and reconfigured closets to dramatically improve our space. We didn't know where to bookend the project, and could see endless options for how to improve our home. We interviewed multiple architects - familiar names that had signs up on the best streets. It was immediately clear that Lorin was the architect for us - he took in the important character of the home (and setting/land, neighboring homes, and street), he saw how we could shape the project to make the most of our resources and opportunities, and his communication style was unmatched by larger and smaller specialty firms alike. He's insightful, funny, has decades of experience in his craft, and (this is where Lorin really hits it out of the park) his design eye is so excellent that he is saving us from hiring a host of other professionals to make our finished result truly sing. In some ways I'd love to keep Lorin Hill our little secret - I can count on only one hand the service providers that so exceed my expectations that their fees don't seem high enough for what they provide (note the design comment above, and he's smoothed enough husband/wife remodel debates - helping us each see logic - that we'll happily enjoy our home for years to come, marriage intact). If you're lucky enough to find Lorin Hill with a space in his schedule that fits your project, grab it. If we ever win the lottery and have unlimited funds, we'll be back to take up all the rest of Lorin's time.
Steve Swearengen, AIA | the Architects office
Emeryville, CA Architects and Building Designers
July 8, 2014
Steve Swearengen is one of the best architects I know. As a business consultant I've worked with hundreds of architects over the years. Steve understands construction better than most and certainly works well with contractors and clients to get their dreams fulfilled. I highly recommend him to any contractor or homeowner who wants it a great job at a reasonable price.
Jennifer Tulley Architects

May 5, 2016
Jennifer is a talented architect with an eye for good design and good sense. She can immediately see how a space could be improved, and has a great sense for how a family will use each room, nook and cranny. She blends the two perspectives to create functional, lovely rooms that we enjoy daily. We have worked with Jennifer on several homes and she has designed floor plans that maximize challenging layouts, and fit every request and need we asked for. Her design aesthetic brought a cleaner, more modern influence to our traditional homes, all while respecting and highlighting the period details we chose to keep. During the construction process Jennifer is a strong advocate for the owner, working to ensure that the choices of materials are reasonable in price, and yield solid aesthetic result. She is patient with first time construction and instructive. During both our remodels she was responsive to my questions, and made sure I understood my choices, and pros and cons of each option. She is very responsive by both phone and email, gets plan revisions done on a timely basis and is just a joy to work with. Meetings with her begin on time, keep moving along, and finish with results.
Wm. F. Holland/Architect
Emeryville, CA Architects and Building Designers
March 23, 2012
We spent two years with Bill Holland, the first conceptualizing ideas for a major remodel of our 1916 Craftsman style house, the second in construction. We loved working with Bill and today appreciate his talents as we enjoy living in our evolved home. Bill is a gifted architect – able to visualize the design and construction of a three dimensional space in his mind’s eye, and then communicate his vision to clients in an understandable way. We wanted more openness and access from the rear of our house to our back yard. The result is stunning – truly an indoor/outdoor living space. Upon the completion of our project, Bill and we were honored to win an award from the City of Piedmont for the Best Outdoor Living Area in 2011.

Mike Cobb has broad vision. In my case, he took a very ordinary property and designed something contemporary that really enhanced the orientation on the lot, took advantage of previously inaccessible views, and made the house design exponentially more livable. I recommend him highly.

We worked with Alexandra for a rebuild of our home, upgrading it from a 3bd/1.5 bath to a 4bd/3.5bath while adding a second floor and changing the layout of the house dramatically. We chose Alexandra based on two critical expectations: that she would be good to work with (after all, you spend countless hours with your architect on a very expensive project), and that she would share our philosophy regarding the importance of combining form and function in house design. We were very lucky to have chosen her. Alexandra indeed spent countless hours with us. She paid careful attention to our wishes and needs. She worked patiently through every detail of the house, helping us maximize not only our living space but also important functional aspects of the house. From beautifully located and proportioned stairs to storage for kids backpacks under an entryway bench and built-in cabinets to roof segments and their slopes, everything was thoughtful, detailed, and practical. Alexandra also showed great professional and personal skill in navigating the permitting process, developing a good relationship with the city’s planning department that allowed us to enjoy all the benefits of the zoning code. She was always ready to help and mediate successfully when issues inevitably came up with our contractor. She followed through with everything she said she would in an even, friendly, and professional manner. We are delighted with our home and, truth be told, also take joy in the many compliments we get from anybody who visits our home or even passes by it. Alexandra was wonderful and we can’t recommend her highly enough.
Rebecca Schnier Architecture
Emeryville, CA Architects and Building Designers
July 22, 2015
I highly recommend Rebecca Schnier Architecture. Rebecca has done several projects for us, including a 1000sf upper level addition, kitchen and bathroom remodels. The first project was in 2001 and the last one in 2012. She does beautiful design work that is very functional. She asks questions to be sure she understands her clients needs and taste. She offers design options and always has her clients best interests in mind. She is very creative and resourceful in her use of space. She is a pleasure to work with and delivers beautiful results.
Guy Lubroth, Architect
Emeryville, CA Architects and Building Designers
December 29, 2014
We engaged Architect Guy Lubroth to help us remodel our apartment in San Francisco. He was very professional and thorough in his review of what could be done architecturally. Guy was also very helpful in presenting several alternatives to us. Our remodel is now complete and it is as perfect as we could have wanted. Thanks to Guy's help the HOA approvals went thru easily and the entire experience was good. We can highly recommend Guy Lubroth to anyone considering building or remodeling. Sincerely, Noel Pinto
