CARNEMARK design + build
Architects and Building Designers in Glen Echo, MD
Average rating: 5 out of 5 starsJune 11, 2013
Carnemark designed and implemented two major renovations for our home. We had used other contractors in the past, but they are the first ones we ever hired back for a second project. We are already thinking about our third with Carnemark! The first project was primarily outdoor work which was a combination of modernizing our look and fixing some water problems -- stuccoed the exterior, installed a metal roof, installed a glass and metal front door entrance and garage door, buried electric and cable wires, replaced cement driveway, installed slate and stainless steel rails at front entrance, installed new outdoor house and yard lighting and fixed a leaky basement wall. We were so pleased with this work, that we rehired them 2 years later for an interior overhaul -- new modern kitchen, reconfigured floor plan, updated bathroom, installed stainless steel railings and steps, new lighting, new air-conditioning duct work and radiators, and new large format tile flooring throughout.

Jeff is a terrific visionary -- he is a wonderful listener and makes sure that the project reflects what the client wants, not what he wants. His artistry, creativity and ingenuity is put to the service of figuring out what is best for the client and their needs. He is very patient and great helping families find the right solution for them. He is a terrific advocate with contractors and helps keep projects on schedule.

Margaret Upton designed a fabulous second floor addition for our one floor 50's rambler. The three bedroom, two bath addition perfectly captured our dream of more space without looking like a "McMansion". We now have an incredible new space that exudes charm and warmth inside and out that beautifully ties in the old with the new. We frequently receive compliments on how well the design fits into street without overpowering the neighboring house - just what we wanted. Working with Margaret exceeded our expectations in every way.

Saltbox Architecture

Average rating: 5 out of 5 starsApril 26, 2016
Our remodeling company has completed several projects with Saltbox over the past few years. The owners, Kevin and Alan, have consistently provided exceptional designs, excellent working drawings, have been creative and available whenever faced with construction challenges from the field crew and have always maintained cooperative relationships with our mutual clients and with sub-contractors. I recommend them highly and would welcome the opportunity to work with their team again.
Broadhurst Architects, Inc.

I interviewed three architects before choosing Broadhurst Architects to work with me on the demo of a approx. 450sq foot addition, the design of the addition of a approx. 750 sq. foot addition, a new back porch and patio, the remodeling of our kitchen, and door and molding upgrades to the existing home. Jeff Broadhurst and his team patiently worked with us for over a year on the design. He had a big challenge. I had dreams of large, dedicated spaces in a tiny footprint with a small budget. I wasn't the easiest customer I am sure. His professionalism extended to managing the construction process and a difficult contractor. The end result exceeds our expectations. We have beautiful spaces that are much larger than I could have dreamed. The attention to detail shines through. I couldn't be happier and love sitting in my new spaces admiring the design and function.

We hired RLA to design our custom house which was recently completed in March 2015. We couldn't be happier with the results and would recommend them to any prospective home builder. From the beginning, we knew we did not want the standard cookie cutter two story colonial that is everywhere in our area, we wanted a custom house with a modern esthetic, not an existing builder plan with a few modifications. Builders will typically tell you that you do not need an architect, and that may be true from a construction perspective, but by forgoing an architect, you lose the opportunity to build a really special house, customized exactly to your needs. It does not add that much extra to the cost. From the beginning, RLA listened to our ideas, paid attention to our budget and designed our home to our exact specifications. While there are many illustrations of how this benefited us, here are three examples: Orientation - we wanted a house that would take the best advantage of natural light and available views. RLA worked hard to orient our house properly on the site and we now have great light, great views and privacy where we want it. The room layout also makes maximum usage of available light and each room has a great view. A builder will just plop your house on the site facing the street, regardless of the orientation of sunlight or privacy. Details - RLA incorporated details in our house that give it that custom, personalized look. Our deep soffitt details, rock stair wall and porch are really unique. Proportions - This is a hard one to describe, but RLA did a great job with sizing details, the proportions including room sizes, trim details, etc. Everything in the house flows beautifully and feels balanced and gracious. Architects understand how big rooms should be! Not to big or too small. My advice to prospective home builders is to forgo more square footage for better advice, materials and design. An architect will ensure you have a really unique home that fits your lifestyle

Greg from Hammer Contractors was one of the best I've worked with. We have not actually started the work yet, but he gave great information and outlined the steps involved in getting it done. He was punctual, and always followed up with an email to check the status of my talks with the bank. He was always respectful and actually listened to us. We will definitely be working with him again.

We have been extremely satisfied with the workmanship and professionalism of Sahnur Bostan of Axis Design Build. Sahnur has communicated with us constantly and has been thorough in all of the plans he has put together for us to date. Sahnur worked with us on designing a 4,500 square foot addition to to our home. We were happy with the ideas he came up with and the attention to detail with every aspect of the plan. He was a pleasure to work with and went above and beyond to make sure our needs and wants were incorporated into the plans. We would definitely recommend him and Axis Design Build for plans large or small.

I would highly reccomend Cathy Cherry. I had the pleasure of working with her on a house that she designed for Baldwin Homes for the Maryland Green Show Home. The area that I designed and furnished was the Kitchen, Eat-in Area and Great Room. I love how she designed the areas to be an open floor plan. I find that homeowners in this area of Maryland like open floor plans because it is a more interactive but, casual way of life. When I heard that Cathy was designing the home and wanted it to be a "tidal" home I knew that her style would fit hand in glove with my "Chesapeake Cozy" style. The architectural detail on the home was top notch. In my area, I particularly loved the strong columns. I repeated the detail in my custom built-ins flanking the fireplace. It was easy to plan the interior design around Cathy's classic taste! Gina Fitzsimmons, ASID
