Featured Reviews for Architects and Building Designers in Hillcrest Heights, MD
Moser Architects PLLC
Architects and Building Designers in Hillcrest Heights, MD
"I recommended Moser Architects, PLLC to everyone looking to build or renovate in the DMV area. Sarah took our quaint Cape Cod home in North Arlington and made it into a beautiful home for a growing family. We told Sarah how we wanted to keep the charm and curb appeal that fit the neighborhood, and she surpassed our expectations. Our home could not be more functional thanks to Sarah's expertise, and we are always receiving compliments. Our open floor plan with large amounts of natural light could not be more perfect. If we ever take the plunge to purchase another home in NOVA in need of renovations, Sarah will receive the first phone call."

Purple Cherry Architects
Architects and Building Designers in Hillcrest Heights, MD
"I would highly reccomend Cathy Cherry. I had the pleasure of working with her on a house that she designed for Baldwin Homes for the Maryland Green Show Home. The area that I designed and furnished was the Kitchen, Eat-in Area and Great Room. I love how she designed the areas to be an open floor plan. I find that homeowners in this area of Maryland like open floor plans because it is a more interactive but, casual way of life. When I heard that Cathy was designing the home and wanted it to be a "tidal" home I knew that her style would fit hand in glove with my "Chesapeake Cozy" style. The architectural detail on the home was top notch. In my area, I particularly loved the strong columns. I repeated the detail in my custom built-ins flanking the fireplace. It was easy to plan the interior design around Cathy's classic taste! Gina Fitzsimmons, ASID"

Claude C. Lapp Architects, LLC
Architects and Building Designers in Hillcrest Heights, MD
"We have used Claude C. Lapp for architectural plans for updates and additions to our 1931 "Cotswold" cottage three times. He has also done work for other family members and friends. He is very intuitive and maintains the proper period or style of the house while making it functional and aesthetically pleasing. He is very gifted and we wouldn't hesitate to refer him to anyone interested in making their existing home more functional or enjoyable or for drawing plans for a new build."

KUBE architecture
Architects and Building Designers in Hillcrest Heights, MD
"Kube Architecture designed a new rear to my 19th Century row house. You can look it up on Houzz where it was featured. We loved working with Rich and Janet and their staff. They are full of good ideas, and we got the fun, edgy, and functional space we always wanted, still respecting the bones of the old house and its quirks. Kube is responsive, creative, clever, thoughtful, and always understanding of client needs, not just design imperatives. Moreover, they are so great to work with, they really listen and care about how you live in your space. They use the best modern materials, and like to experiment. They are especially known for their handling of light and color. Modern isn't so serious or cold when Kube designs it! I can't wait to hire them again."

Donald Lococo Architects
Architects and Building Designers in Hillcrest Heights, MD
"I have been working with Donald Lococo Architects for the past two years on a large residential project in Alexandria, Virginia. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Donald and his staff. The house is a fabulous hybrid: traditional front facade contrasted with a thoroughly modern section in the back. The house is nearing completion...seeing this space come together - full of glass, light and dramatic open spaces - has been wonderful to watch. Five star design...five star firm!"

Koncept Design + Build
Architects and Building Designers in Hillcrest Heights, MD
"Architect Ken Marzullo created a design for the total renovation of our house from the foundation up. He personally oversaw most of the construction to ensure an exceptional level of quality work. The renovation was completed in a timely manner while even meeting our requests for change orders. Ken listened well and was very creative in interpreting what we wanted. Additionally, while we felt that our input was very welcomed, we really appreciated Ken’s recommendations and explanations regarding several aspects of the design from practical and functional perspectives that we had not considered, rather than simply doing what we asked. As construction progressed, Ken seemed to view our project with the same level of thoughtfulness and care that he would in his own home in terms of identifying enhancements and making adjustments as the project progressed. In essence, Ken not only did what he said he was going to do, but even more. With respect to the sub-contractors, there was exceptional coordination of the work of numerous tradesmen resulting in very minimal down time. Quality control during the course of construction was excellent; for example, 90% of the items that we noted for attention were addressed before we even mentioned them. The finished project exceeded our expectations; we would highly recommend Ken Marzullo as an architect for anyone considering a renovation or a design for a new home"

Gardner Architects LLC
Architects and Building Designers in Hillcrest Heights, MD
"As an architectural photographer, I have known and worked for Amy Gardner of Gardner Mohr Architects for more than five years. She is one of a group of architects that is thinking about the future and how she can utilize her generous talents to make better more sustainable and environmentally friendly buildings. I have found her designs to be invigorating. The spaces eminently functional and her designs to utilize the available light and air flow to be of equal magnitude. In short, the spaces and buildings are livable, functional, breathing spaces that are simply exiting and fun to be in. It has always been my pleasure to photograph these spaces and to convey with a photograph what Gardner Mohr Architects have created."

Wentworth, Inc.
Architects and Building Designers in Hillcrest Heights, MD
"Our kitchen and family room renovation was not our first construction project, having done 3 other major projects and built a house long-distance. We started this project with another design-build firm that has an excellent reputation in Washington, DC area, but we quickly severed that relationship--and walked away from our deposit--because neither the design nor the communication was what we wanted. The decision to change firms and start over ended up being a great decision. So we began interviewing--again. This time we hit the jackpot with Bruce Wentworth of Wentworth Inc. His three design proposals were inspired and gave us all of our wish list: walk-in pantry, no upper cabinets over the work areas (but lots of storage), large island, butler's pantry, clutter-free paper storage system, more open kitchen/family room, and overall a kitchen and family room that are a better fit for our 1926 house. We also had lots of little things that we wanted such as no outlets on the backsplash--no easy feat in those areas where we had no upper cabinets--and custom-designed pantry shelves, but they solved each item on my wish list, brilliantly. Before the construction began, we had a meeting so that we knew what to expect. Did any surprises arise? Of course they did--this is a house built in 1926! However, all those surprises were solved seamlessly by the design-build team. Any time I had a question or needed design advice, I was totally comfortable calling the architects and or talking with the lead carpenter, depending on what the question was. In addition, one of the architects went with me on all shopping trips to pick out, for instance, the countertops, the sink, the tile for the backsplash, the faucet, etc. Never was I sent to a showroom on my own. Sometimes, the architects had assembled the samples for me at their office and I made my decisions there. What an easy process that was, especially since the architects had already narrowed down the choices for me. All of the team members were professional, friendly, and as detail-oriented as I am. Oh, did I mention that the project was on budget AND on time? And the final result? Beyond our wildest dreams--everyone who walks in says it looks exactly like us, fits the house, and is gorgeous. Would I hire Wentworth again? Absolutely."

How do I find the best Hillcrest Heights architect for my home design project?

It is best to hire a home architect who will be involved in all phases of the design process, from the initial concept to the completed construction. The architect is often the first person you will hire for your project. If necessary, they might also help you select and hire Maryland subcontractors, which can include the builders, engineers and landscaper. Interior architects are also involved in negotiating contracts for all involved participants. It is for these reasons that it is extremely important for you to have a good relationship with the Hillcrest Heights residential architect you hire. He or she can be the tie-breaking vote between you and the general contractor and can be your biggest advocate during the construction process. Different architecture firms in Hillcrest Heights, MD provide different services, so the scope of the work can span from pre-design environmental impact studies to selecting furniture and finishes, depending on what your specific needs are.

What sort of process can I expect from a residential architect?

As far as the process goes, the architecture firm or individual that you choose will start with concept drawings and finish with construction drawings and documents. Some firms even design with 3D renderings and videos, but that should not be assumed. There should be plenty of meetings between you and your building designer until you have agreed upon a design that you are completely happy with. Always keep in mind that the designer will have building codes to follow, and likely pre-existing design limitations when dealing with a remodel, so while they might not be able to execute your exact ideas they always have your safety and aesthetics in mind. One of the most important duties of a residential architect is to serve as managers and supervise most aspects of construction, as well as facilitate communication between all other contractors, so you can expect them to be present throughout the entire building process to ensure everything is executed as planned.

It is very important to hire the right professional for the job. Remember that the most well-known or established designer might not provide the best architectural services for your needs. It all comes down to the individual project. Research and ask people whose work you like for recommendations. It's important to have somewhat of an idea of the style of house architecture that you prefer, as well as the amount you would like to spend. Residential architects in Hillcrest Heights, MD are natural problem solvers. They will assess the entire situation and help you to solve your problems too. Don't settle for a single company too early. Call and interview a few. Make sure that you feel like your personalities will mesh well and that you like their professional perspective.

Questions to ask prospective Hillcrest Heights interior architects:

  • What is your fee structure?
  • What does the cost include?
  • Do you have professional liability insurance?
  • Can you handle my special requests (ADA, LEED etc.)?
  • What types of renderings (3D, video, illustrative) will you produce?
  • What is your experience with similar projects?
  • When do you expect to start and be finished with the project?
  • What do your services include? (It's best that the services are until construction is completed.)
  • What happens when the cost exceeds the budget?
  • Can you provide me with references?
  • Would you say your work has a defining style? (This is important in case the architect's personal style will interfere with your vision.)
  • Will you help with hiring a general contractor and subcontractors?
  • What do you estimate the cost will be?
  • What will I need to provide?
  • Are there any complications you foresee with this project?
