Haven Design Workshop

I am a retired Interior Designer and wanted to work with an architect who was up on the latest improvements in HVAC and plumbing. I had a pretty clear idea of the layout of our new house but needed help deciding on a contractor to hire as well as some creative structural details to make our 1800 sq. ft. single level home work for us as we age without looking like an "old folks home". Haven Design was instrumental in helping us select a contractor and we have been very pleased with the results.

Armentrout Residence Our home was roughly a 1560 square foot Cape Cod cottage on a large lot. Originally, we intended to enlarge our kitchen, that eventually led to a larger addition and a full remodel. Our contractor, Norm Ferkingstad, introduced us to Bruce, an architect he’d worked with on other projects. We enjoyed working with Bruce as he really listened to what we wanted, he gave us so many choices, and introduced options we didn’t realize we had. Our home is now approximately 2900 square feet, including a new master suite. We wanted the original feel of a cottage to be maintained. Bruce did a great job. From the street, the house doesn’t look any larger than it originally did. From the sides and rear, the addition blends seam-lessly with the existing structure. Bruce did an amazing job expanding our small home, blending old with new, while keeping the charm. During early design meetings, Bruce stressed that we should interact with our home, not just exist in it. Bruce insights and recommendations added so much to our family’s home life experience. We really enjoy his creation of a variety of spaces to fulfill a diversity of moods. We have a large extended family, so we often have people visiting during the summer. We always hear from guests how comfortable our home is. They say it has a flow that leads you through the home. Parties and gatherings are comfortable and people are never clumped in the kitchen, but are spread throughout our home. Everyone comments there is a great balance of private space and inviting public space. We can easily have 30 people in our home without it feeling crowded. Yet, when it’s just the four of us, the house still feels cozy and warm. The design of our deck and outdoor space is inviting and in constant use. As a result our home has become the “go to place” for family events and parties, including a small private wedding in our backyard. We couldn’t be happier with our home. We love how Bruce blended our traditional desires with contem-porary ideas. Many times we have stood on a small hill on our property at night, looking down at our home, lit up, and take delight in what we have. We are so very thankful for what Bruce created for us. From design through construction, Bruce provided great customer service. He is patient and very respon-sive. He charges fair fees for superior design service. Not only do we highly recommend Bruce; we also hired him again for our next project, a separate carriage-style garage and home office. For us, Bruce is clearly an exceptional architect. We have worked with Wai/GorrnyDesign on several renovations and restoration projects of our 1917 Craftsman house. Over the last several years, those projects have included: the addition of a front porch on the house, a kitchen remodel with pantry, fireplace brickwork and mantel restoration and the renovation of our sun room (which is now my absolute favorite room in the house!). We have the highest regard for Wai/Gorny's work—both in terms of design and of knowledge about houses from this era. Our relationship with Alexandra from Wai/Gorny has been a real three-way partnership--between us, the contractor and her. She definitely has opinions and perspectives to offer based on her expertise, but she always listens to our needs and desires, and is committed to finding the best designs after factoring in our input. She is very approachable and willing to meet with us anytime we've requested getting together. Best of all, she has a great sense of humor and has been a lot of fun to work with! Alexandra has also been an excellent advocate for us with the city and the permitting process related to one of our projects. When there were questions from the City, she promptly and thoroughly addressed their information needs. We have just embarked on another project with Wai/Gorny--this time a bathroom remodel and some updates to several bedrooms. She's loaned us personal copies of her books and provided web resources and links where we could get ideas. As you can tell, we keep coming back to Wai/Gorny for all of our remodeling and renovation projects because of the quality of her ideas, designs, and ability to work with our contractors and subcontractors.

Highest recommendation! We absolutely love the new custom home that Martin, with Concept Architecture, designed for us. Martin took our ideas and some very site specific requirements and created a home that is so much more than we expected. Martin is friendly, professional and REALLY listens. The very first draft sketches proved that he understood what we wanted and needed. He worked with the county to meet all of the special requirements for building on a slope near water.

Luke was fantastic. He designed the remodel for our 40+ year-old home. The existing structure gave him a number of restrictions to navigate, and Luke gave us some great ideas to give us the home we were looking for. Luke helped us to stay on budget, with customization and fine details in key areas of the home. Highly recommend!

We've toured the residential and commercial projects created on Bainbridge Island by Coates Design, and have followed their work for years. Our office was in the same building, and we often stopped in to learn more about their projects. We've always been impressed by their great architectural sense of aesthetics, and their ability to create innovative work that blends well into the surroundings of the project location. Very professional, very pleasant and very accomplished.
Lane Williams Architects

Lane Williams took our dated and very tired looking 1960’s one story, pitched roof home with a daylight basement and transformed it into a beautiful modern home with strong horizontal and vertical planes and cantilevered masses. Lane's vision for the house really came together when we decided to spend the money to expand the carport to two cars. We were thinking it might not work, but when he showed us the renderings we both just thought wow – it balanced everything out and got us a look that was spectacular. The finished house got great reactions from the neighbors, and it still thrills us when we overhear the bicyclists as they zip by saying ‘Cool House!’ http://coop15.com/images/house_shows/Enatai/Enatai2before.jpg http://coop15.com/images/house_shows/Enatai/Enatai3.jpg http://coop15.com/images/house_shows/Enatai/Enatai1.jpg
