We have a mid-century modern house that we wanted to remodel. It took quit a few tries to find an architect who "gets it." Curt Cline from Modern House took our mid- century modern and made it current with out loosing the original charm. It's like the way the house should of been built in the beginning. Curt listened to what we wanted and came back with a design that far exceeded our imagination. With the other architects we felt we would have to educate ourselves, design what we wanted and just have them draw up the plans. Curt's been a dream to work with, he worked with us patiently through all are questions and ideas. We worked out all the little details and have a final plan. As soon as spring comes we will start our remodel. Can't Wait. Chris DeBruine

They produce good designs that tend to be on the more modern end of the spectrum. Carl, the founder has a good aesthetic as does Tom. They are not ideal if you have a tight budget as they put design ahead of cost.
Timeline Design + Build
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
Average rating: 5 out of 5 starsSeptember 22, 2012
Timeline Design designed and build our 6,000 sq ft house. They took our ideas and made them better. As the project progressed they improved the design and solved problems as the reality of the construction unveiled ways to make it better or address issues. This was done as a matter of course, not as a way to jack up the price through change orders. Most of these changes did, in fact, not change the price. Some did require extra or different materials or effort but these only added T&M charges. We are still delighted with our house 7 years after it was completed. Timeline Design still sends people out to fix or address any issues we have as they arise. Timeline Design is an honest, committed and talented designer/builder. I can't recommend them high enough!

Anat helped me renovate and expand my 60 years-old start-up house. Anat modernized the layout and successfully extended the flow of natural light. Anat followed the project from inception to fruition, working out permits and coordinating contractors while at the same time helping me keep sane and within budget. It's great to have a good professional at your service, and Anat proved to be a great architect and partner for my project.
Edmonds + Lee Architects

We hired Edmonds + Lee for a major interior remodel of a 4,000 square foot home in Pacific Heights in San Francisco, including the addition of a roof deck. The work started in 2013 and lasted about 18 months. We interviewed 7 other architects as well, and chose Edmonds + Lee with no hesitation because we were very impressed by the strong interest they showed in the project, even at the early stage when our ideas on the scope of the project itself were still forming, and because they had a clear design aesthetic that was very close to our sensibility. Both Robert Edmonds and Vivian Lee were heavily involved in the project, as was Eddy Joaquim, who also played a key role in the day to day managing of the project. Vivian had great input in the interior decoration as well. We cannot say enough good things about all of them. They helped us develop our vision for the house, and provided an excellent interface between our vision and the builders’ implementation. Their structured and methodical attention to detail throughout the process gave us enormous confidence—we knew that even if we missed something, they would not. Edmonds + Lee were also excellent at maintaining clear communication with us and the contractors, setting realistic expectations on timelines and budgets, which helped make us feel in control of the project. They were able to come up with design solutions that truly transformed the feel of the house—in our case restructuring the main hallway entrance and creating the stairs access to the roof deck are probably the best examples. We have worked with architects before (in London) and never been disappointed, but this is definitely the best experience we have had. We would definitely choose Edmonds + Lee again for any future project. Working with Edmonds + Lee puts a mark on your house with a clear unifying sense of design that runs through the residence, creating a space with clean modern lines which is at the same time warm and welcoming—exactly what we were after.

We couldn't be happier with the design of our ADU. Adam's design captured our vision perfectly and was wonderful to collaborate with throughout the entire process.

Acadia-Architecture Davide Giannella

We worked with Davide Giannella, who is an Italian and the principal, on a house expansion of over 800SF. The house was a ranch home. Davide designed an elevated roof with clerestory windows for the new family room, added two bedrooms and one bathroom, and re-designed the front and back yards so that we have a flagstone terrace with concrete benches and outdoor kitchen. I found him a good listener, with creative solutions, and effortlessly blends the client's requirement and taste with what is modern and classy. I also found that he is a master of light. He strategically positions skylights and clerestory windows so that our interior is bathed in light. He gives great style recommendations about interior, furniture placement, color and lighting. We can ask him about almost everything. He has a wholistic vision and the skills and taste to bring it to life. His plans are one of the most detailed many of our contractors have seen. We consider ourselves lucky to work with him and the money well spent.
Fergus Garber Architects

Average rating: 5 out of 5 starsDecember 11, 2012
FGY Architects are very personable, creative and professional. My husband and I enjoyed several conversations with the main architects, Catherine Fergus and Dan Garber about the why, how and what we would change in our home to make it more livable for our family. We both happened to practice industrial designer, which made the creative process with the Garbers' most enjoyable, by being able to describe our ideas verbally and by sketching them in our meetings. Our project grew in size and budget during the process but since our plan was to be in our remodeled home for many decades, the increases have been worth it. To this day, we appreciate several ideas which both Catherine and Dan suggested from the expansion of the front porch, to enlarging doorways and creating an open feeling between rooms and hallways in relationship.
Klopf Architecture

Average rating: 5 out of 5 starsFebruary 23, 2014
My HOA hired Klopf Architecture to design new fences, front gates, lighting and paint color plans for our condominiums. They were designed in 1963 by Quincy and Jones and built in 1964 by Eichler Homes. Replacements in the 1990s did not serve the mid-century aesthetic well -- but owners did not want to return to the light-inhibiting original thin-line panel fences and gates. The Klopf team produced three outstanding options. The one we selected includes brilliant design features like frosted glass doors with 1/4-in spaces between fence boards to allow light in along with clear glass doors for the pool area with 1/2-in spaces between boards surrounding it. The overall design and color plan is clean and elegant. John Klopf and his team could not have been more friendly and flexible throughout. We look forward to implementing this design over the next few years.
