Studio S Squared Architecture, Inc.
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"Eugene Sakai stood out far above the pack of the 5 Architectural firms that we investigated to do our total house construction. He was simply the best to deal with, very professional, on time, and took a personal interest in the project, and within budget. We moved in 2 years ago and still love him and the contractor, C.W. Wright in San Carlos. We are pleased to show the house through Eugene Sakai at any time."

M. Designs Architects
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"We did two projects with Malika and love the results. She planned two remodel/ additions for us plus helped with some interior design choices. Our house is modern but she also did my brothers house which is ranch style."
- jbaher
square three design studios
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"They produce good designs that tend to be on the more modern end of the spectrum. Carl, the founder has a good aesthetic as does Tom. They are not ideal if you have a tight budget as they put design ahead of cost."

Acadia-Architecture Davide Giannella
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"We worked with Davide Giannella, who is an Italian and the principal, on a house expansion of over 800SF. The house was a ranch home. Davide designed an elevated roof with clerestory windows for the new family room, added two bedrooms and one bathroom, and re-designed the front and back yards so that we have a flagstone terrace with concrete benches and outdoor kitchen. I found him a good listener, with creative solutions, and effortlessly blends the client's requirement and taste with what is modern and classy. I also found that he is a master of light. He strategically positions skylights and clerestory windows so that our interior is bathed in light. He gives great style recommendations about interior, furniture placement, color and lighting. We can ask him about almost everything. He has a wholistic vision and the skills and taste to bring it to life. His plans are one of the most detailed many of our contractors have seen. We consider ourselves lucky to work with him and the money well spent."

Amparo Del Rio, C.I.D.
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"Amparo designed my kitchen and my bathroom. I love both rooms. I tell everyone that I could not have done it without her and it is true! Both rooms are small and so it was a challenge to find materials that fit and did not create cramped spaces. There was no room for mistakes and Amparo did not make any mistakes. Amparo always sees the best solution to any design problem immediately; it is not a process of trial and error with her. She also knows all about the best materials at the best prices, and where to acquire them. She is very easy to work with, listens intently to my preferences and honors them. She helped me communicate with the contractor in order to reach a higher level of quality in the workmanship. I highly recommend her services."

John Lum Architecture, Inc. AIA
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"We used John Lum Architecture for the complete remodel of ~1000 sq ft in San Francisco. John and team were fantastic to work with. Very creative yet good at listening to our thoughts and integrating our ideas. They understand how to both design a gorgeous contemporary space while still keeping it comfortable and livable. We depended on them with a lot of design detail recommendations such as fixtures, paint, tiles and they always had great suggestions that made the process much simpler and easy to manage. They are very professional, extremely responsive and timely. There were no surprises during the entire process including on deadlines and budgets. I would strongly recommend them."

Tektive Design
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"As a homeowner with very specific taste, Pearl was tremendously helpful to me in remaining true to my dream throughout the process. She is obviously very smart, as is evidenced by her impressive academic and work credentials, but what one won't discover until you actually work with her is that she has deep integrity and can be trusted with one's most precious project. Her project management skills helped me stay organized, and her ability to efficiently create detailed and compelling computer renderings helped me visualize the design. Finally, Pearl surrounds herself with the highest quality contractors. She introduced us to Pete Moffat Construction, who were simply outstanding in the level of service and attention to detail. The project I asked her to embark upon was by Bay Area standards quite small in scale. However, Pearl understood that for me, having grown up with little, the project was significant, and she treated it accordingly. I explained to her at the outset that my dream is to have a small 90-square-foot "jewelry-box-type" conservatory in which to sew, sip tea and perhaps watch the sunset with my husband over a glass of wine. I was inspired by the beautiful stained glass ceiling in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, as well as the exquisite stained glass ceiling at the Headquarters of the Daughters of the American Revolution in D.C. Pearl helped me incorporate this inspiration into a design that had classical references but was "fresh" and bright. My husband also wanted the skylights that the stained glass covered to be functional so that the room could be energy efficient. We were extremely pleased with the result. Every day when I walk into that tiny, inspiring space, my heart sings. It is also a very comfortable room. We are truly grateful to Pearl for her support, guidance and care throughout the process. We are fortunate to have worked with her. The process was so smooth from our perspective that we were quite honestly a little sad for it to be over!"

Gast Architects
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"We have collaborated with Gast Architects on numerous high end residential remodels and have always been struck by their level of integrity and profesionalism. Our experience with their team on our projects has always been very positive which had resulted in seamless design/build aesthetics."
- The Garden Route Company
Daniel Ruark, Architect
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"Aaron Green could not have asked for a more worthy heir than Daniel Ruark, just as Frank Lloyd Wright could not have asked for a more worthy heir than Aaron Green. In 2013, I purchased a small residence on the Stanford campus designed by Aaron Green, a real gem of a house that had an outdoor tool shed in the carport area. I consulted Ruark about transforming the shed into a master bathroom that would incorporate into the main house without compromising or adding to the main plan. Ruark produced an ingenious, exquisite design, down to the last detail, and oversaw the construction, which entailed considerable challenges. The result is a stunning master bathroom that blends seamlessly into the unique architecture and color tones of the house. Daniel Ruark's professionalism, honesty, and devotion to his work are exemplary. He is a a master artist of organic architecture. Aaron Green recognized this, and the work Ruark did for me confirms it."

Mark English Architects, AIA
Architects and Building Designers in Stanford, CA
"I am currently working with Mark on a remodel. I found him on Houzz as I liked some of his projects and was not disappointed. Mark listens extremely well, understands what I want and than makes it better. He has a great sense of space, light and general flow. I also like his pragmatic approach - he knows where things make a difference and an investment is needed, and where one can get away with potential cheaper approaches.. He is also just a really nice and inspiring person to work with.."

How do I find the best Stanford architect for my home design project?

It is best to hire a home architect who will be involved in all phases of the design process, from the initial concept to the completed construction. The architect is often the first person you will hire for your project. If necessary, they might also help you select and hire California subcontractors, which can include the builders, engineers and landscaper. Interior architects are also involved in negotiating contracts for all involved participants. It is for these reasons that it is extremely important for you to have a good relationship with the Stanford residential architect you hire. He or she can be the tie-breaking vote between you and the general contractor and can be your biggest advocate during the construction process. Different architecture firms in Stanford, CA provide different services, so the scope of the work can span from pre-design environmental impact studies to selecting furniture and finishes, depending on what your specific needs are.

What sort of process can I expect from a residential architect?

As far as the process goes, the architecture firm or individual that you choose will start with concept drawings and finish with construction drawings and documents. Some firms even design with 3D renderings and videos, but that should not be assumed. There should be plenty of meetings between you and your building designer until you have agreed upon a design that you are completely happy with. Always keep in mind that the designer will have building codes to follow, and likely pre-existing design limitations when dealing with a remodel, so while they might not be able to execute your exact ideas they always have your safety and aesthetics in mind. One of the most important duties of a residential architect is to serve as managers and supervise most aspects of construction, as well as facilitate communication between all other contractors, so you can expect them to be present throughout the entire building process to ensure everything is executed as planned.

It is very important to hire the right professional for the job. Remember that the most well-known or established designer might not provide the best architectural services for your needs. It all comes down to the individual project. Research and ask people whose work you like for recommendations. It's important to have somewhat of an idea of the style of house architecture that you prefer, as well as the amount you would like to spend. Residential architects in Stanford, CA are natural problem solvers. They will assess the entire situation and help you to solve your problems too. Don't settle for a single company too early. Call and interview a few. Make sure that you feel like your personalities will mesh well and that you like their professional perspective.

Questions to ask prospective Stanford interior architects:

  • What is your fee structure?
  • What does the cost include?
  • Do you have professional liability insurance?
  • Can you handle my special requests (ADA, LEED etc.)?
  • What types of renderings (3D, video, illustrative) will you produce?
  • What is your experience with similar projects?
  • When do you expect to start and be finished with the project?
  • What do your services include? (It's best that the services are until construction is completed.)
  • What happens when the cost exceeds the budget?
  • Can you provide me with references?
  • Would you say your work has a defining style? (This is important in case the architect's personal style will interfere with your vision.)
  • Will you help with hiring a general contractor and subcontractors?
  • What do you estimate the cost will be?
  • What will I need to provide?
  • Are there any complications you foresee with this project?
