Our team of designers pride ourselves on listening closely to our clients and working together to deliver inspiring residences that respond specifically to your lifestyle, the context of your property, and make you and your family feel at home. We understand that each client is unique and has specific wants and needs for their home and deserves a design that responds to their lifestyle. Each project we undertake is custom designed to respond to the characteristics of the site, surrounding context, the client’s program, and budget. We don't come with preconceived ideas, but do bring years of experience as we work with you to find the right solution to your design challenge. We begin the design process by listening and learning from our clients - understanding your goals, your budget, your lifestyle - and then working together to develop a list of required spaces for the new residence. This client centered approach has lead to great success with custom home projects to date, leading to great architecture that responds to context, addresses sustainability, and satisfies the client's needs. Our Custom Home design specialties include: > Modern and Contemporary styles > Luxury amenities > Inspiring interiors > Strong connection between the architecture and surrounding landscape > High performance "sustainable" design strategies > Designing for Aging-in-place, ADA Accessibility, and Barrier Free Design > Close attention to materiality > Healthy indoor environments As we embark on a journey of discovery with our clients, we challenge preconceived ideas, and offer a range of concepts for the new house. Together we discuss these options and iterate as we mold the design to respond to your taste and how you envision living in the new home. This process includes many discussions as we get to know you and craft a project that is architecturally inspiring, blending beauty and function. It is also important to note that although we are proudly based in Portland, Oregon we have undertaken projects across the United States and abroad. If you are looking for a new primary residence, a wonderful vacation property, or second home to retire in, we would love to work with you.

Emerick Architects is a Portland-based commercial and residential architecture firm founded in 2000 by principals Melody and Brian Emerick. Our mission is to create locally rooted, environmentally sensitive and thoughtfully crafted spaces, while providing a fun and collaborative experience for our clients throughout the process. From designing and building Portland's first LEED Gold home, to being entrusted to restore Portland's oldest commercial building, we take community and environmental stewardship to heart. We esteem great craftsmanship, believing that an investment in craft is an investment in quality. Preservation, sustainability and artistry are synonymous with our work. Together these ideals help us to energize our communities, protect our resources and enhance our cultural values. At Emerick Architects, we are passionate about collaboration and feel the building process should be enjoyable. Fun might not be what most architecture firms advertise, but we are not like most architecture firms. We invest a lot of time with our clients, getting to know the project, and more importantly, the people involved. Building can be stressful and intimidating, but we strive to make it easier. As leaders and collaborators, we take our job very seriously — but we don't take ourselves too seriously.

My design approach is to listen, understand your vision and to work with you interactively to create the best outcome that responds to your aesthetic, functional needs and budget. I focus on kitchen and bath remodels, and new construction addition design. That being said I love working on all sizes of projects no matter the scope or budget. I also provide universal design for those needing to age-in-place or have accessibility challenges. Whether it is a quick upgrade or a complete home masterplan, I fully engage in the design process with my clients. With over 35 years of residential and commercial design experience, I pride myself in guiding my clients seamlessly through the design experience, which can be daunting with all the decisions to be made. My strength is in space planning and thinking three dimensionally, so that all the details and spatial planes come together in a complete way. The result is a painless project that comes in on budget and on time. By planning ahead, there are no mistakes and costly tear out. My team works with my clients in a cooperative, interactive style that results in a beautiful product that functions at the highest level. My product knowledge, both technically and aesthetically, will make the selection process flow with ease. Extensive travel experience inspires me on a daily basis. My love of color, design and fibers are my personal design preference. I can respond to my clients who ask for a more timeless approach because of budget and longevity. I like to think that we can create a fusion of multiple design concepts for the solution.
