We are a collaborator whose primary objective is to channel the values and desires (and whimsy) of our client into the objects and space that surround them: a chair, a door, an interior room, an exterior space, or a building. We seek to provide opportunities for intimate moments of beauty. We celebrate life with nature and aspire to impart an expanded and connected sense of seasonality. We appoint materials that recognize the path of time and engage all five senses. We embrace the finesse and creativity that our technological innovations allow us as they enable us to commit anew to the mantra of the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. We believe in the hand of the artist. If it’s worth doing, It’s worth doing beautifully.

Our projects range from kitchen renovations to new custom homes and cabins, placing an equal emphasis on style, function, health and poetics, woven together with the thread of ecological design, and mindful of long term cost. We are intrigued by multigenerational houses, backyard cottages, co-housing and small multi-family projects. We can bring the Passive House approach to all of these building types. With roots in Seattle and over twenty-five years doing exclusively green design we are uniquely qualified to help you create lasting, beautiful deep-green buildings. In 2009 I became one of the first 100 certified Passive House consultants in the United States, and we have pursued that design approach with every appropriate project since. I have over thirty-five years of experience as a design professional, including more than thirty years as principal of my own firm. I grew up in a small town in northeastern Ohio and studied architecture at the University of Toronto.

All my design training was done in England where I grew up. I have a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Brookes University, Oxford and a Diploma in Architecture (British equivalent of Masters) from Brighton University. After passing all the training requisites (a total of 7 years of pure architectural training) I was registered by the Architectural Registration Council of the United Kingdom (ARCUK) in 1991. In 1992 I came to live in Seattle, Washington and have been helping homeowners with design work and obtaining permits for homes and home remodels ever since. I have 20 years of experience helping clients get what they want. Homeowners remodel for many different reasons, very often it is because they are at a major transition in their life; a birth, a divorce, a death, children leaving the nest, or retirement. But always, they are trying to make an improvement to a home to better mirror who they are and how they want to live. One of my roles as designer is to tap into who they are and what will make them feel more satisfied in their home, and the part that motivates me, is the creative solution that comes as a response to those conditions. Most of us have very similar needs for storage and function dictated by the location and time in which we live, but everyone has very different emotional needs when it comes to their home. A home is most satisfying when it reflects our own emotional needs and lifestyle. Our emotional needs might be for privacy and to have a refuge from the world, or it might be to have a place where we can surround ourselves with our friends and family. Whatever those needs are, I find myself addressing them in my work whilst creating something with beauty and longevity within the budget and the codes. I enjoy the process of designing and enjoy weaving everyone into the process to ensure an optimal outcome.

CTA Design Builders has been a successful design-build company in the Seattle area for over 20 years. We recently closed the construction arm of our firm so we could concentrate on architecture and design. This longtime construction experience informs and inspires our architectural practice with deep practical know-how. We continue to approach each project with the same holistic design-build mindset: we work with you early in the process to set realistic design goals based on your budget, assemble the appropriate team, identify potential constructibility issues, and stay involved during the entire construction process. We are your advocate. We work with a number of proven, outstanding contractors who appreciate our desire for a cooperative relationship and our attention to the challenges of building! We are well aware that the most successful projects are the result of a strong, collaborative team of players. As architects, creating the right design for you is our primary focus. We are skilled at distilling and interpreting your taste, style and goals into a home or remodel that works for your daily life and expresses your soul. We are strong believers in fundamental requirements of what makes a good home: connection to the outdoors, daylight, a good “flow” with spatial layouts that function well but also embody human scale and craft, creating a sense of warmth and heart in your home. Contact us to start a conversation about the possibilities. Let us help you create a home you’ll love!

Our journey through life produces a story that can manifest itself in the way we build our surroundings. Our stories are spoken through the details, materials, and volumes of the buildings in which we live, learn, and play. These elements, when arranged in a meaningful way with their context, are what help buildings enrich the lives of their inhabitants. First Lamp is in search of your story.
